  And Maachah the wife of Machir bare a son , and she called his name Peresh ; and the name of his brother was Sheresh ; and his sons were Ulam and Rakem .

 

17. 울람의 아들은 브단이니 이는 다 길르앗의 자손이라 길르앗은 마길의 아들이요 므낫세의 손자며

  And the sons of Ulam ; Bedan . These were the sons of Gilead , the son of Machir , the son of Manasseh .

  And his sister Hammoleketh bare Ishod , and Abiezer , and Mahalah .

21. 그 아들은 사밧이요 그 아들은 수델라며 저가 또 에셀과 엘르앗을 낳았더니 저희가 가드 토인에게 죽임을 당하였으니 이는 저희가 내려가서 가드 사람의 짐승을 빼앗고자 하였음이라

  And Zabad his son , and Shuthelah his son , and Ezer , and Elead , whom the men of Gath that were born in that land slew , because they came down to take away their cattle .

 

22. 그 아비 에브라임이 위하여 여러 날 슬퍼하므로 그 형제가 와서 위로하였더라

  And Ephraim their father mourned many days , and his brethren came to comfort him.

 

23. 그 후에 에브라임이 그 아내와 동침하였더니 아내가 잉태하여 아들을 낳으니 그 집이 재앙을 받았으므로 그 이름을 브리아라 하였더라

  And when he went in to his wife , she conceived , and bare a son , and he called his name Beriah , because it went evil with his house .

 

24. 에브라임의 딸은 세에라니 저가 아래 윗 벧호론과 우센세에라를 세웠더라

  (And his daughter was Sherah , who built Beth–horon the nether , and the upper , and Uzzen–sherah .)

  And their possessions and habitations were, Beth–el and the towns thereof, and eastward Naaran , and westward Gezer , with the towns thereof; Shechem also and the towns thereof, unto Gaza and the towns thereof:

 

29. 또 므낫세 자손의 지경에 가까운 벧스안과 그 향리와 다아낙과 그 향리와 므깃도와 그 향리와 돌과 그 향리라 이스라엘의 아들 요셉의 자손이 이 여러 곳에 거하였더라

  And by the borders of the children of Manasseh , Beth–shean and her towns , Taanach and her towns , Megiddo and her towns , Dor and her towns . In these dwelt the children of Joseph the son of Israel .

 

30. 아셀의 아들들은 임나와 이스와와 이스위와 브리아요 저희의 매제는 세라며

  The sons of Asher ; Imnah , and Isuah , and Ishuai , and Beriah , and Serah their sister .

【대상7:1 CWC】[GENEALOGIES AND PEDIGREES]
1. Introductory.
With this begins the study of those historical books of the Old Testament written shortly after the return from the Babylonian captivity, the remainder of the series including 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, and Esther.
"Chronicles" means "diaries" or "journals," and the books give a recapitulation of sacred history from the time of Adam, in which the earlier books of the Old Testament are drawn upon and occasionally supplemented. The Holy Spirit, who is the real Author, has a right to do this when the occasion calls for it.
The closest relation exists between the Chronicles and Kings. The last-named were written, it is thought, by Jeremiah, and the first-named by a priest or Levite. Kings must have been compiled shortly after the people went into exile, Chronicles after their return. Kings deal more with the inner spiritual condition of things. Chronicles with the external modes of worship.
There are differences in the two records here and there. Not only are genealogies differently grouped, but names of places are changed, speeches of persons are presented from dissimilar aspects, religious festivals have more than one description given them, and things of that kind; but there is no contradiction not explainable by the changes incident to time, the later writer's point of view, the object in mind, negligent transcribing and the like.
Why Chronicles were written is difficult to say, but there must have been some good reason for going over the ground again, "some new aspect of the history to signalize, and some new lesson to convey to the people of God on returning from the captivity." What these things may be must appear as we proceed.
2. Subdivisions.
The first nine chapters contain the genealogies of the patriarchs, the twelve tribes, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem till the beginning of the kingdom, the purpose being to connect David, the great forerunner of the Messiah, as well as the priests and Levites of his time with the antediluvian patriarchs. They have been subdivided as follows:
(1) The Patriarchs from Adam to Jacob and Esau, with the descendants of the latter till the era of the Edomite kings, c. 1.
At first these names may not seem of importance to us, but we remember that the Holy Spirit caused them to be written and that is enough. And "when we know how to awaken them from their sleep, they do not remain so dead as they at first appear, but revive the most important traditions of the ancient nations and families, like the petrifactions and mountain strata of the earth, which rightly questioned, tell the history of long vanished ages."
{2) The Sons of Jacob, or the Generations of Judah till David, with the Latter's Posterity till Elioenai and His Seven Sons, 2:1-4:23.
In this we discover a biographic gem in the story of Jabez and his prayer (c. 4:9, 10) of whom we are told nothing further. Verse 10 has homiletic value in the three things for which Jabez prayed and which he received -- prosperity, power, and protection.
Another homiletic suggestion is in the words, "There they dwelt with the king for his work" (v. 23). These potters "that dwelt among plants and hedges," may have been artistic craftsmen adjacent to the royal gardens at Jerusalem, not merely in the reign of one king but all of them. Remains of these potteries have been found in recent times.
(3) The Descendants of Simeon and the Tribes East of the Jordan till the Assyrian Captivity, 4:24-5:26.
This division is interesting, as it records two conquests or migrations of the Simeonites (4:38-43), and corroborates what we learned earner about the small size of this tribe (compa계5:27 with Numbers 1-4 and 수19:1-9.) In the same way compare the reference to Reuben, Joseph and Judah, chapter 5:1, 2, with the earlier account in Genesis 49. Nor should we permit such an inspired comment as chapter 5:20 to escape us.
(4) The Levites and Their Locations, 6:1-81.
This division may be broken up, thus: The sons of Levi (vv. 1-3); the priests down to the captivity (vv. 4-15); the families of Gershom, Merari and Kohath (vv. 16-48); the office of Aaron and his line unto Ahimaaz (vv. 49-53); the cities of the priests and the Levites (vv. 54-81).
(5) The Remaining Tribes, cc. 7-8.
These tribes include Issachar (7:1-5); Benjamin (vv. 6-12); Naphtali (v. 13); Manasseh (vv. 14-19); Ephraim (vv. 20-29); Asher (vv. 30-40); the chief men of Benjamin (8:1-32); the house of Saul (vv. 33-40).
Two tribes are omitted, Dan and Zebulon, but why, no one can determine. In the case of Dan, perhaps, it is judicial punishment because of their early and almost total fall into idolatry. They are omitted again in the list of Revelation 8. Zebulon's omission is more difficult to explain. It was a small tribe, especially just before and after the exile, but it was the tribe whose territory included Nazareth where Jesus dwelt.
(6) The Inhabitants of Jerusalem Till the Times of the Kings, c. 9.

 

【대상7:1 MHCC】Genealogies.
—Here is no account either of Zebulun or Dan. We can assign no reason why they only should be omitted; but it is the disgrace of the tribe of Dan, that idolatry began in that colony which fixed in Laish, and called it Dan, Jud 18 and there one of the golden calves was set up by Jeroboam. Dan is omitted, Re 7. Men become abominable when they forsake the worship of the true God, for any creature object.

 

【대상7:2 JFB】2. whose number was in the days of David two and twenty thousand and six hundred—Although a census was taken in the reign of David by order of that monarch, it is not certain that the sacred historian had it in mind, since we find here the tribe of Benjamin enumerated [대상7:6-12], which was not taken in David's time; and there are other points of dissimilarity.

 

【대상7:3 JFB】3. five: all of them chief men—Four only are mentioned; so that as they are stated to be five, in this number the father, Izrahiah, must be considered as included; otherwise one of the names must have dropped out of the text. They were each at the head of a numerous and influential division of their tribe.

 

【대상7:5 JFB】5. fourscore and seven thousand—exclusive of the 58,600 men which the Tola branch had produced (대상7:24), so that in the days of David the tribe would have contained a population of 45,600. This large increase was owing to the practice of polygamy, as well as the fruitfulness of the women. A plurality of wives, though tolerated among the Hebrews, was confined chiefly to the great and wealthy; but it seems to have been generally esteemed a privilege by the tribe of Issachar, "for they had many wives and sons" [대상7:4].

 

【대상7:11 JFB】7. the sons of Bela—Each of them was chief or leader of the family to which he belonged. In an earlier period seven great families of Benjamin are mentioned (민26:38), five of them being headed by these five sons of Benjamin, and two descended from Bela. Here five families of Bela are specified, whence we are led to conclude that time or the ravages of war had greatly changed the condition of Benjamin, or that the five families of Bela were subordinate to the other great divisions that sprang directly from the five sons of the patriarch.

 

【대상7:12 JFB】12. Shuppim also, and Huppim—They are called Muppim and Huppim (창46:21) and Hupham and Shupham (민26:39). They were the children of Ir, or Iri (대상7:7).
and Hushim, the sons—"son."
of Aher—"Aher" signifies "another," and some eminent critics, taking "Aher" as a common noun, render the passage thus, "and Hushim, another son." Shuppim, Muppim, and Hushim are plural words, and therefore denote not individuals, but the heads of their respective families; and as they were not comprised in the above enumeration (대상7:7, 9) they are inserted here in the form of an appendix. Some render the passage, "Hushim, the son of another," that is, tribe or family. The name occurs among the sons of Dan (창46:23), and it is a presumption in favor of this being the true rendering, that after having recorded the genealogy of Naphtali (대상7:13) the sacred historian adds, "the sons of Bilhah, the handmaid, who was the mother of Dan and Naphtali." We naturally expect, therefore, that these two will be noticed together, but Dan is not mentioned at all, if not in this passage.

sons of Bilhah—As Dan and Naphtali were her sons, Hushim, as well as these enumerated in 대상7:13, were her grandsons.

 

【대상7:14 JFB】대상7:14-40. Of Manasseh.
14, 15. The sons of Manasseh—or descendants; for Ashriel was a grandson, and Zelophehad was a generation farther removed in descent (민26:33). The text, as it stands, is so confused and complicated that it is exceedingly difficult to trace the genealogical thread, and a great variety of conjectures have been made with a view to clear away the obscurity. The passage [대상7:14, 15] should probably be rendered thus: "The sons of Manasseh were Ashriel, whom his Syrian concubine bare to him, and Machir, the father of Gilead (whom his wife bare to him). Machir took for a wife Maachah, sister to Huppim and Shuppim."

 

【대상7:21 JFB】21. whom the men of Gath … slew, &c.—This interesting little episode gives us a glimpse of the state of Hebrew society in Egypt; for the occurrence narrated seems to have taken place before the Israelites left that country. The patriarch Ephraim was then alive, though he must have arrived at a very advanced age; and the Hebrew people, at all events those of them who were his descendants, still retained their pastoral character. It was in perfect consistency with the ideas and habits of Oriental shepherds that they should have made a raid on the neighboring tribe of the Philistines for the purpose of plundering their flocks. For nothing is more common among them than hostile incursions on the inhabitants of towns, or on other nomad tribes with whom they have no league of amity. But a different view of the incident is brought out, if, instead of "because," we render the Hebrew particle "when" they came down to take their cattle, for the tenor of the context leads rather to the conclusion that "the men of Gath" were the aggressors, who, making a sudden foray on the Ephraimite flocks, killed the shepherds including several of the sons of Ephraim. The calamity spread a deep gloom around the tent of their aged father, and was the occasion of his receiving visits of condolence from his distant relatives, according to the custom of the East, which is remarkably exemplified in the history of Job (욥2:11; compare 요11:19).
