  And David assembled all the princes of Israel , the princes of the tribes , and the captains of the companies that ministered to the king by course , and the captains over the thousands , and captains over the hundreds , and the stewards over all the substance and possession of the king , and of his sons , with the officers , and with the mighty men , and with all the valiant men , unto Jerusalem .

  Then David the king stood up upon his feet , and said , Hear me, my brethren , and my people : As for me, I had in mine heart to build an house of rest for the ark of the covenant of the Lord , and for the footstool of our God , and had made ready for the building :

  But God said unto me, Thou shalt not build an house for my name , because thou hast been a man of war , and hast shed blood .

 

4. 그러나 이스라엘 하나님 여호와께서 전에 나를 내 부친의 온 집에서 택하여 영원히 이스라엘 왕이 되게 하셨나니 곧 하나님이 유다 지파를 택하사 머리를 삼으시고 유다의 족속에서 내 부친의 집을 택하시고 내 부친의 아들들 중에서 나를 기뻐하사 온 이스라엘의 왕을 삼으셨느니라

  Howbeit the Lord God of Israel chose me before all the house of my father to be king over Israel for ever : for he hath chosen Judah to be the ruler ; and of the house of Judah , the house of my father ; and among the sons of my father he liked me to make me king over all Israel :

 

5. 여호와께서 내게 여러 아들을 주시고 그 모든 아들 중에서 내 아들 솔로몬을 택하사 여호와의 나라 위에 앉혀 이스라엘을 다스리게 하려 하실새

  And of all my sons , (for the Lord hath given me many sons ,) he hath chosen Solomon my son to sit upon the throne of the kingdom of the Lord over Israel .

 

6. 내게 이르시기를 네 아들 솔로몬 그가 내전을 건축하고 내 여러 뜰을 만들리니 이는 내가 저를 택하여 내 아들을 삼고 나는 그 아비가 될 것임이라

  And he said unto me, Solomon thy son , he shall build my house and my courts : for I have chosen him to be my son , and I will be his father .

 

7. 저가 만일 나의 계명과 규례를 힘써 준행하기를 오늘날과 같이 하면 내가 그 나라를 영원히 견고케 하리라 하셨느니라

  Moreover I will establish his kingdom for ever , if he be constant to do my commandments and my judgments , as at this day .

 

8. 이제 너희는 온 이스라엘 곧 여호와의 회중의 보는데와 우리 하나님의 들으시는데서 너희 하나님 여호와의 모든 계명을 구하여 지키기로 하라 그리하면 너희가 이 아름다운 땅을 누리고 너희 후손에게 끼쳐 영원한 기업이 되게 하리라

  Now therefore in the sight of all Israel the congregation of the Lord , and in the audience of our God , keep and seek for all the commandments of the Lord your God : that ye may possess this good land , and leave it for an inheritance for your children after you for ever .

 

9. 내 아들 솔로몬아 너는 네 아비의 하나님을 알고 온전한 마음과 기쁜 뜻으로 섬길지어다 여호와께서는 뭇 마음을 감찰하사 모든 사상을 아시나니 네가 저를 찾으면 만날 것이요 버리면 저가 너를 영원히 버리시리라

  And thou, Solomon my son , know thou the God of thy father , and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind : for the Lord searcheth all hearts , and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts : if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever .

 

10. 그런즉 너는 삼갈지어다 여호와께서 너를 택하여 성소의 전을 건축하게 하셨으니 힘써 행할지니라

  Take heed now; for the Lord hath chosen thee to build an house for the sanctuary : be strong , and do it.

 

11. 다윗이 전의 낭실과 그 집들과 그 곳간과 다락과 골방과 속죄소의 식양을 그 아들 솔로몬에게 주고

  Then David gave to Solomon his son the pattern of the porch , and of the houses thereof, and of the treasuries thereof, and of the upper chambers thereof, and of the inner parlours thereof, and of the place of the mercy seat ,

 

12. 또 성신의 가르치신 모든 식양 곧 여호와의 전의 뜰과 사면의 모든 방과 하나님의 전 곳간과 성물 곳간의 식양을 주고

  And the pattern of all that he had by the spirit , of the courts of the house of the Lord , and of all the chambers round about , of the treasuries of the house of God , and of the treasuries of the dedicated things :

 

13. 또 제사장과 레위 사람의 반열과 여호와의 전에 섬기는 모든 일과 섬기는 데 쓰는 모든 그릇의 식양을 설명하고

  Also for the courses of the priests and the Levites , and for all the work of the service of the house of the Lord , and for all the vessels of service in the house of the Lord .

 

14. 또 모든 섬기는 데 쓰는 금기명을 만들 금의 중량과 모든 섬기는 데 쓰는 은기명을 만들 은의 중량을 정하고

  He gave of gold by weight for things of gold , for all instruments of all manner of service ; silver also for all instruments of silver by weight , for all instruments of every kind of service :

 

15. 또 금등대들과 그 등잔 곧 각등대와 그 등잔을 만들 금의 중량과 은등대와 그 등잔을 만들 은의 중량을 각기 적당하게 하고

  Even the weight for the candlesticks of gold , and for their lamps of gold , by weight for every candlestick , and for the lamps thereof: and for the candlesticks of silver by weight , both for the candlestick , and also for the lamps thereof, according to the use of every candlestick .

 

16. 또 진설병의 각 상을 만들 금의 중량을 정하고 은상을 만들 은도 그렇게 하고

  And by weight he gave gold for the tables of shewbread , for every table ; and likewise silver for the tables of silver :

 

17. 고기 갈고리와 대접과 종자를 만들 정금과 금잔 곧 각 잔을 만들 금의 중량과 또 은잔 곧 각 잔을 만들 은의 중량을 정하고

  Also pure gold for the fleshhooks , and the bowls , and the cups : and for the golden basons he gave gold by weight for every bason ; and likewise silver by weight for every bason of silver :

 

18. 또 향단에 쓸 정금과 또 타시는 처소된 그룹들의 식양대로 만들 금의 중량을 정하여 주니 이 그룹들은 날개를 펴서 여호와의 언약궤를 덮는 것이더라

  And for the altar of incense refined gold by weight ; and gold for the pattern of the chariot of the cherubims , that spread out their wings, and covered the ark of the covenant of the Lord .

 

19. 다윗이 가로되 이 위의 모든 것의 식양을 여호와의 손이 내게 임하여 그려 나로 알게 하셨느니라

  All this, said David, the Lord made me understand in writing by his hand upon me, even all the works of this pattern .

 

20. 또 그 아들 솔로몬에게 이르되 너는 강하고 담대하게 이 일을 행하고 두려워 말며 놀라지 말라 네가 여호와의 전 역사의 모든 일을 마칠 동안에 여호와 하나님 나의 하나님이 너와 함께하사 네게서 떠나지 아니하시고 너를 버리지 아니하시리라

  And David said to Solomon his son , Be strong and of good courage , and do it: fear not, nor be dismayed : for the Lord God , even my God , will be with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee, until thou hast finished all the work for the service of the house of the Lord .

 

21. 제사장과 레위 사람의 반열이 있으니 여호와의 전의 모든 역사를 도울 것이요 또 모든 공역에 공교한 공장이 기쁜 마음으로 너와 함께 할 것이요 또 모든 장관과 백성이 온전히 네 명령 아래 있으리라

  And, behold, the courses of the priests and the Levites , even they shall be with thee for all the service of the house of God : and there shall be with thee for all manner of workmanship every willing skilful man , for any manner of service : also the princes and all the people will be wholly at thy commandment .

【대상28:1 JFB】대상28:1-8. David Exhorts the People to Fear God.
1. David assembled all the princes of Israel—that is, the representatives of the people, the leading men of the kingdom, who are enumerated in this verse according to their respective rank or degree of authority.
princes of the tribes—(대상27:16-22). Those patriarchal chiefs are mentioned first as being the highest in rank—a sort of hereditary noblesse.
the captains of the companies—the twelve generals mentioned (대상27:1-15).
the stewards, &c.—(대상27:25-31).
the officers—Hebrew, "eunuchs," or attendants on the court (삼상8:15; 왕상22:9; 왕하22:18); and besides Joab, the commander-in-chief of the army, the heroes who had no particular office (대상11:10-12:40; 삼하23:8-39). This assembly, a very mixed and general one, as appears from the parties invited, was more numerous and entirely different from that mentioned (대상23:2).

1. The Downfall of Saul, c. 10.
In reading this chapter with whose general contents we became familiar in 1 Samuel 31, it is important to note the inspired comment at its close (vv.
13, 14).
2. David's Heroes, cc. 11, 12.
In the history of David in this book, the writer dwells chiefly on its prosperous side, passing over the rest as lightly as possible. His anointing at Hebron (vv. 1-3), reveals nothing of what we learned earlier of the rival kingdom of the house of Saul, and the seven years before his exaltation over all Israel. Again, in the list of warriors (11:10-47), there is an omission of Joab's treachery and barbarous conduct in the cases of Abner, Uriah and Absalom.
Chapter 12 contains a supplemental list of braves who attached themselves to David earlier, and during the days of Saul, and of whom we have no record until now.
3. David's Victories and Festivals, cc. 13-16.
These begin with the bringing up of the ark as far as the house of Obed-edom (c. 13). Then follows the account of battles with the Philistines (c. 14), which occupies a different position from that in 2 Samuel 5, the reason for which can only be conjectured. After this the ark is brought up to Jerusalem (cc. 15, 16), the record being more detailed than in Samuel. Note, for example, the preparation and act of transfer. A tent is erected, (15:1) possibly in the vicinity of the palace, after the model of the old tabernacle. Then a consultation is held (v. 2), the representative men are assembled (v. 3), the bearers chosen (vv. 12-15), the singers appointed (vv. 16-24). Then the act itself, with its rejoicings, sacrifices and distribution of gifts (15:25-16:3). Then the initial service and the psalm of thanksgiving (vv. 4-36).
Another thus analyzes the eight strophes of this psalm: The first, summons to praise (vv. 8-11); the second, to think on the wonders and judgments of the Lord (vv. 12-14); the third, to think of the covenant made with the fathers (vv. 15-18); the fourth, gives the reasons to remember this covenant (vv. 19-22); the fifth, affirms that all the world shall concur in the greatness and glory of God (vv. 23-27); the sixth, all nations shall worship Him (vv. 28-30); the seventh, the inanimate creation will exult before Him (vv. 31-33); the eighth, closes with a repeated summons to praise and prayer (vv. 34-36).
4. David and The Temple, cc. 17-22.
Except as to its location the record in chapter 17 is in substance the same as in 2 Samuel 7. The "group of war reports," cc. 18-20, runs parallel to four sections in 2 Samuel which in that case are separated from one another by other matters. The story of the plague following the census (c. 21), contains some deviations from that in Samuel, as for example, its position in the record, the fact that the offence was instigated by Satan, that Benjamin and Levi were not numbered, and that the threshing-floor was thereafter the constant place of sacrifice by David. These things are additions and not contradictions. As to the last named, the words in verse 28, "At that time * * * he sacrificed there," have been rendered by Luther and others, "was wont to offer there," meaning that he did it repeatedly, frequently. In an earlier lesson it was stated that this threshing-floor subsequently became the site of Solomon's temple.
After the episode represented by these chapters the author returns to the subject of the temple (c. 22), speaking of David's preparation of the materials (vv. 1-5), his charge to Solomon (vv. 6-16), and finally his appeal to the princes to assist (vv. 17-19).
6. The Temple and Military Officers, cc. 23-27.
The opening comment of this section gives the reason for what follows. David was old and felt the need of putting things in readiness for his son (v. 1). There are two things that concern him chiefly, the worship of God and the strengthening of the kingdom, and it is significant that the worship of God receives attention first.
The chapters arrange themselves thus: Chapter 23 deals with the Levites, their number and classification for work; 24 does the same for the priests, except that the closing verses refer again to the Levites; 25 speaks of the singers; 26 of the porters, treasurers and other business officers; and 27 of the army, including its divisions and commanders.
7. David's Last Directions and Death, cc, 28, 29.
The last directions of David concern the building of the temple where all the princes, the captains, the courtiers and the heroes are addressed (vv. 1, 2), and Solomon in their presence is invested with power and authority as his successor (w. 5-21).
Note the words in verse 12. "And the pattern of all that he had by the Spirit." We use a capital "S" believing the Holy Spirit to be intended, and that the words should be read in the light of verse 19, "All this, the Lord made me understand in writing by His hand upon me, even all the works of this pattern." Are we not to understand, difficult as the words may be, that as God revealed the original of the temple to Moses in the wilderness when He revealed the tabernacle, so now also He controlled and directed David when the time came for the actual erection of the temple?
Do not pass chapter 29 carelessly. Note David's example of giving (vv. 3-5), and the lever it affords to make an appeal to others. See the working of the Spirit of God among the people in the gladness of it all (v. 9), a fact David recognizes and for which he praises God, verse 10 and the following.
When it says "they made Solomon king the second time" (v. 22), it is in contrast with 23:1. In that case the first proclamation was made, but now the actual anointing took place. (Compare 왕상1:32 and the following verses.)

 

【대상28:1 MHCC】During David's last sickness, many chief priests and Levites were at Jerusalem. Finding himself able, David spoke of his purpose to build a temple for God, and of God's disallowing that purpose. He opened to them God's gracious purposes concerning Solomon. David charged them to cleave stedfastly to God and their duty. We cannot do our work as we should, unless we put on resolution, and fetch in strength from Divine grace. Religion or piety has two distinct parts. The first is knowledge of God, the second is worship of God. David says, Know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and a willing mind. God is made known by his works and word. Revelation alone shows the whole character of God, in his providence, his holy law, his condemnation of sinners, his blessed gospel, and the ministration of the Spirit to all true believers. The natural man cannot receive this knowledge of God. But thus we learn the value of the Saviour's atonement, and of the sanctification of the Holy Spirit, and are influenced to walk in all his commandments. It brings a sinner to his proper place at the foot of the cross, as a poor, guilty, helpless worm, deserving wrath, yet expecting every thing needful from the free mercy and grace of God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ. Having been forgiven much, the pardoned sinner learns to love much.

I had in mine heart—I proposed, or designed.
to build an house of rest—a solid and permanent temple.
for the footstool of our God—God seated between the cherubim, at the two extremities of the ark, might be said to be enthroned in His glory, and the coverlet of the ark to be His footstool.
and had made ready for the building—The immense treasures which David had amassed and the elaborate preparations he had made, would have been amply sufficient for the erection of the temple of which he presented the model to Solomon.

 

【대상28:3 JFB】3. thou hast been a man of war, and hast shed blood—The church or spiritual state of the world, of which the temple at Jerusalem was to be a type, would be presided over by One who was to be pre-eminently the Prince of Peace, and therefore would be represented not so fitly by David, whose mission had been a preparatory one of battle and conquest, as by his son, who should reign in unbroken peace.

 

【대상28:4 JFB】4, 5. he hath chosen Solomon—The spirit of David's statement is this:—It was not my ambition, my valor, or my merit that led to the enthronement of myself and family; it was the grace of God which chose the tribe, the family, the person—myself in the first instance, and now Solomon, to whom, as the Lord's anointed, you are all bound to submit. Like that of Christ, of whom he was a type, the appointment of Solomon to the kingdom above all his brethren was frequently pre-intimated (대상17:12; 22:9; 삼하7:12-14; 12:24, 25; 왕상1:13).

Now … in the sight of all Israel, … keep and seek for all the commandments of the Lord, &c.—This solemn and earnest exhortation to those present, and to all Israel through their representatives, to continue faithful in observing the divine law as essential to their national prosperity and permanence, is similar to that of Moses (신30:15-20).

9, 10. And thou, Solomon my son—The royal speaker now turns to Solomon, and in a most impressive manner presses upon him the importance of sincere and practical piety.
know thou—He did not mean head knowledge, for Solomon possessed that already, but that experimental acquaintance with God which is only to be obtained by loving and serving Him.

Christ is the true temple, the church is the gospel temple, and heaven the everlasting temple; all are framed according to the Divine counsels, and the plan laid in the Divine wisdom, ordained before the world, for God's glory and our good. David gave this pattern to Solomon, that he might go by rule. Materials were provided for the most costly utensils of the temple. Directions were given which way to look for help in this great undertaking. Be not dismayed; God will help thee, and thou must look up to him in the first place. We may be sure that God, who owned our fathers, and carried them through the services of their day, will, in like manner, never leave us, while he has any work to do in us, or by us. Good work is likely to go on, when all concerned are hearty in furthering it. Let us hope in God's mercy; if we seek him, he will be found of us.

【대상28:18 JFB】18, 19. the chariot of the cherubim—The expanded wings of the cherubim formed what was figuratively styled the throne of God, and as they were emblematical of rapid motion, the throne or seat was spoken of as a chariot (시18:10; 99:1). It is quite clear that in all these directions David was not guided by his own taste, or by a desire for taking any existing model of architecture, but solely by a regard to the express revelation of the divine will. In a vision, or trance, the whole edifice, with its appurtenances, had been placed before his eyes so vividly and permanently, that he had been able to take a sketch of them in the models delivered to Solomon.
