■ 누가복음 9장
1. 예수께서 열두 제자를 불러 모으사 모든 귀신을 제어하며 병을 고치는 능력과 권세를 주시고
Then he called his twelve disciples together , and gave them power and authority over all devils , and to cure diseases .
2. 하나님의 나라를 전파하며 앓는 자를 고치게 하려고 내어 보내시며
And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God , and to heal the sick .
3. 이르시되 여행을 위하여 아무 것도 가지지 말라 지팡이나 주머니나 양식이나 돈이나 두 벌 옷을 가지지 말며
And he said unto them , Take nothing for your journey , neither staves , nor scrip , neither bread , neither money ; neither have two coats apiece .
4. 어느 집에 들어가든지 거기서 유하다가 거기서 떠나라
And whatsoever house ye enter into , there abide , and thence depart .
5. 누구든지 너희를 영접지 아니하거든 그 성에서 떠날 때에 너희 발에서 먼지를 떨어버려 저희에게 증거를 삼으라 하시니
And whosoever will not receive you , when ye go out of that city , shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them .
6. 제자들이 나가 각 촌에 두루 행하여 처처에 복음을 전하며 병을 고치더라
And they departed , and went through the towns , preaching the gospel , and healing every where .
7. 분봉 왕 헤롯이 이 모든 일을 듣고 심히 당황하여 하니 이는 혹은 요한이 죽은 자 가운데서 살아났다고도 하며
Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him : and he was perplexed , because that it was said of some , that John was risen from the dead ;
8. 혹은 엘리야가 나타났다고도 하며 혹은 옛 선지자 하나가 다시 살아났다고도 함이라
And of some , that Elias had appeared ; and of others , that one of the old prophets was risen again .
9. 헤롯이 가로되 요한은 내가 목을 베었거늘 이제 이런 일이 들리니 이 사람이 누군고 하며 저를 보고자 하더라
And Herod said , John have I beheaded : but who is this , of whom I hear such things ? And he desired to see him .
10. 사도들이 돌아와 자기들의 모든 행한 것을 예수께 고한대 데리시고 따로 벳새다라는 고을로 떠나 가셨으나
And the apostles , when they were returned , told him all that they had done . And he took them , and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called Bethsaida .
11. 무리가 알고 따라왔거늘 예수께서 저희를 영접하사 하나님 나라의 일을 이야기하시며 병 고칠 자들은 고치시더라
And the people , when they knew it, followed him : and he received them , and spake unto them of the kingdom of God , and healed them that had need of healing .
12. 날이 저물어 가매 열두 사도가 나아와 여짜오되 무리를 보내어 두루 마을과 촌으로 가서 유하며 먹을 것을 얻게 하소서 우리 있는 여기가 빈 들이니이다
And when the day began to wear away , then came the twelve , and said unto him , Send the multitude away , that they may go into the towns and country round about , and lodge , and get victuals : for we are here in a desert place .
13. 예수께서 이르시되 너희가 먹을 것을 주어라 하시니 여짜오되 우리에게 떡 다섯 개와 물고기 두 마리 밖에 없으니 이 모든 사람을 위하여 먹을 것을 사지 아니하고는 할 수 없삽나이다 하였으니
But he said unto them , Give ye them to eat . And they said , We have no more but five loaves and two fishes ; except we should go and buy meat for all this people .
14. 이는 남자가 한 오천 명 됨이러라 제자들에게 이르시되 떼를 지어 한 오십 명씩 앉히라 하시니
For they were about five thousand men . And he said to his disciples , Make them sit down by fifties in a company .
15. 제자들이 이렇게 하여 다 앉힌 후
And they did so , and made them all sit down .

16. 예수께서 떡 다섯 개와 물고기 두 마리를 가지사 하늘을 우러러 축사하시고 떼어 제자들에게 주어 무리 앞에 놓게 하시니
Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes , and looking up to heaven , he blessed them , and brake , and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude .
17. 먹고 다 배불렀더라 그 남은 조각 열두 바구니를 거두니라
And they did eat , and were all filled : and there was taken up of fragments that remained to them twelve baskets .
18. 예수께서 따로 기도하실 때에 제자들이 주와 함께 있더니 물어 가라사대 무리가 나를 누구라고 하느냐
And it came to pass , as he was alone praying , his disciples were with him : and he asked them , saying , Whom say the people that I am ?
19. 대답하여 가로되 침례 요한이라 하고 더러는 엘리야라, 더러는 옛 선지자 중의 하나가 살아났다 하나이다
They answering said , John the Baptist ; but some say, Elias ; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again .
20. 예수께서 이르시되 너희는 나를 누구라 하느냐 베드로가 대답하여 가로되 하나님의 그리스도시니이다 하니
He said unto them , But whom say ye that I am ? Peter answering said , The Christ of God .
21. 경계하사 이 말을 아무에게도 이르지 말라 명하시고
And he straitly charged them , and commanded them to tell no man that thing ;
22. 가라사대 인자가 많은 고난을 받고 장로들과 대제사장들과 서기관들에게 버린 바 되어 죽임을 당하고 제삼일에 살아나야 하리라 하시고
Saying , The Son of man must suffer many things , and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes , and be slain , and be raised the third day .
23. 또 무리에게 이르시되 아무든지 나를 따라 오려거든 자기를 부인하고 날마다 제 십자가를 지고 나를 좇을 것이니라
And he said to them all , If any man will come after me , let him deny himself , and take up his cross daily , and follow me .
24. 누구든지 제 목숨을 구원코자 하면 잃을 것이요 누구든지 나를 위하여 제 목숨을 잃으면 구원하리라
For whosoever will save his life shall lose it : but whosoever will lose his life for my sake , the same shall save it .
25. 사람이 만일 온 천하를 얻고도 자기를 잃든지 빼앗기든지 하면 무엇이 유익하리요
For what is a man advantaged , if he gain the whole world , and lose himself , or be cast away ?
26. 누구든지 나와 내 말을 부끄러워하면 인자도 자기와 아버지와 거룩한 천사들의 영광으로 올 때에 그 사람을 부끄러워하리라
For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words , of him shall the Son of man be ashamed , when he shall come in his own glory , and in his Father’s , and of the holy angels .
27. 내가 참으로 너희에게 이르노니 여기 섰는 사람 중에 죽기 전에 하나님의 나라를 볼 자들도 있느니라
But I tell you of a truth , there be some standing here , which shall not taste of death , till they see the kingdom of God .
28. 이 말씀을 하신 후 팔 일쯤 되어 예수께서 베드로와 요한과 야고보를 데리시고 기도하시러 산에 올라가사
And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings , he took Peter and John and James , and went up into a mountain to pray .
29. 기도하실 때에 용모가 변화되고 그 옷이 희어져 광채가 나더라
And as he prayed , the fashion of his countenance was altered , and his raiment was white and glistering .
30. 문득 두 사람이 예수와 함께 말하니 이는 모세와 엘리야라
And , behold , there talked with him two men , which were Moses and Elias :
31. 영광 중에 나타나서 장차 예수께서 예루살렘에서 별세하실 것을 말씀할새
Who appeared in glory , and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem .
32. 베드로와 및 함께 있는 자들이 곤하여 졸다가 아주 깨어 예수의 영광과 및 함께 선 두 사람을 보더니
But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep : and when they were awake , they saw his glory , and the two men that stood with him .
33. 두 사람이 떠날 때에 베드로가 예수께 여짜오되 주여 우리가 여기 있는 것이 좋사오니 우리가 초막 셋을 짓되 하나는 주를 위하여, 하나는 모세를 위하여, 하나는 엘리야를 위하여 하사이다 하되 자기의 하는 말을 자기도 알지 못하더라
And it came to pass , as they departed from him , Peter said unto Jesus , Master , it is good for us to be here : and let us make three tabernacles ; one for thee , and one for Moses , and one for Elias : not knowing what he said .
34. 이 말 할 즈음에 구름이 와서 저희를 덮는지라 구름 속으로 들어갈 때에 저희가 무서워하더니
While he thus spake , there came a cloud , and overshadowed them : and they feared as they entered into the cloud .
35. 구름 속에서 소리가 나서 가로되 이는 나의 아들 곧 택함을 받은 자니 너희는 저의 말을 들으라 하고
And there came a voice out of the cloud , saying , This is my beloved Son : hear him .
36. 소리가 그치매 오직 예수만 보이시더라 제자들이 잠잠하여 그 본 것을 무엇이든지 그 때에는 아무에게도 이르지 아니하니라
And when the voice was past , Jesus was found alone . And they kept it close , and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen .
37. 이튿날 산에서 내려 오시니 큰 무리가 맞을새
And it came to pass, that on the next day , when they were come down from the hill , much people met him .
38. 무리 중에 한 사람이 소리질러 가로되 선생님 청컨대 내 아들을 돌아 보아 주옵소서 이는 내 외아들이니이다
And , behold , a man of the company cried out , saying , Master , I beseech thee , look upon my son : for he is mine only child .
39. 귀신이 저를 잡아 졸지에 부르짖게 하고 경련을 일으켜 거품을 흘리게 하며 심히 상하게 하고야 겨우 떠나가나이다
And , lo , a spirit taketh him , and he suddenly crieth out ; and it teareth him that he foameth again , and bruising him hardly departeth from him .
40. 당신의 제자들에게 내어 쫓아 주기를 구하였으나 저희가 능히 못하더이다
And I besought thy disciples to cast him out ; and they could not .
41. 예수께서 대답하여 가라사대 믿음이 없고 패역한 세대여 내가 얼마나 너희와 함께 있으며 너희를 참으리요 네 아들을 이리로 데리고 오라 하시니
And Jesus answering said , O faithless and perverse generation , how long shall I be with you , and suffer you ? Bring thy son hither .
42. 올 때에 귀신이 거꾸러뜨리고 심한 경련을 일으키게 하는지라 예수께서 더러운 귀신을 꾸짖으시고 아이를 낫게 하사 그 아비에게 도로 주시니
And as he was yet a coming , the devil threw him down , and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit , and healed the child , and delivered him again to his father .
43. 사람들이 다 하나님의 위엄을 놀라니라 저희가 다 그 행하시는 모든 일을 기이히 여길새 예수께서 제자들에게 이르시되
And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God . But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did , he said unto his disciples ,
44. 이 말을 너희 귀에 담아두라 인자가 장차 사람들의 손에 넘기우리라 하시되
Let these sayings sink down into your ears : for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men .
45. 저희가 이 말씀을 알지 못하였나니 이는 저희로 깨닫지 못하게 숨김이 되었음이라 또 저희는 이 말씀을 묻기도 두려워하더라
But they understood not this saying , and it was hid from them , that they perceived it not : and they feared to ask him of that saying .
46. 제자 중에서 누가 크냐 하는 변론이 일어나니
Then there arose a reasoning among them , which of them should be greatest .
47. 예수께서 그 마음에 변론하는 것을 아시고 어린 아이 하나를 데려다가 자기 곁에 세우시고
And Jesus , perceiving the thought of their heart , took a child , and set him by him ,
48. 저희에게 이르시되 누구든지 내 이름으로 이 어린 아이를 영접하면 곧 나를 영접함이요 또 누구든지 나를 영접하면 곧 나 보내신 이를 영접함이라 너희 모든 사람 중에 가장 작은 그이가 큰 자니라
And said unto them , Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me : and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me : for he that is least among you all , the same shall be great .
49. 요한이 여짜오되 주여 어떤 사람이 주의 이름으로 귀신을 내어 쫓는 것을 우리가 보고 우리와 함께 따르지 아니하므로 금하였나이다
And John answered and said , Master , we saw one casting out devils in thy name ; and we forbad him , because he followeth not with us .
50. 예수께서 가라사대 금하지 말라 너희를 반대하지 않는 자는 너희를 위하는 자니라 하시니라
And Jesus said unto him , Forbid him not : for he that is not against us is for us .
51. 예수께서 승천하실 기약이 차가매 예루살렘을 향하여 올라가기로 굳게 결심하시고
And it came to pass , when the time was come that he should be received up , he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem ,
52. 사자들을 앞서 보내시매 저희가 가서 예수를 위하여 예비하려고 사마리아인의 한 촌에 들어갔더니
And sent messengers before his face : and they went , and entered into a village of the Samaritans , to make ready for him .
53. 예수께서 예루살렘을 향하여 가시는 고로 저희가 받아 들이지 아니하는지라
And they did not receive him , because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem .
54. 제자 야고보와 요한이 이를 보고 가로되 주여 우리가 불을 명하여 하늘로 좇아 내려 저희를 멸하라 하기를 원하시나이까
And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said , Lord , wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven , and consume them , even as Elias did ?
55. 예수께서 돌아보시며 꾸짖으시고
But he turned , and rebuked them , and said , Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of .
56. 함께 다른 촌으로 가시니라
For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives , but to save them. And they went to another village .
57. 길 가실 때에 혹이 여짜오되 어디로 가시든지 저는 좇으리이다
And it came to pass, that , as they went in the way , a certain man said unto him , Lord , I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest .
58. 예수께서 가라사대 여우도 굴이 있고 공중의 새도 집이 있으되 인자는 머리 둘 곳이 없도다 하시고
And Jesus said unto him , Foxes have holes , and birds of the air have nests ; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head .
59. 또 다른 사람에게 나를 좇으라 하시니 그가 가로되 나로 먼저 가서 내 부친을 장사하게 허락하옵소서
And he said unto another , Follow me . But he said , Lord , suffer me first to go and bury my father .
60. 가라사대 죽은 자들로 자기의 죽은 자들을 장사하게 하고 너는 가서 하나님의 나라를 전파하라 하시고
Jesus said unto him , Let the dead bury their dead : but go thou and preach the kingdom of God .
61. 또 다른 사람이 가로되 주여 내가 주를 좇겠나이다마는 나로 먼저 내 가족을 작별케 허락하소서
And another also said , Lord , I will follow thee ; but let me first go bid them farewell , which are at home at my house .
62. 예수께서 이르시되 손에 쟁기를 잡고 뒤를 돌아보는 자는 하나님의 나라에 합당치 아니하니라 하시니라
And Jesus said unto him , No man , having put his hand to the plough , and looking back , is fit for the kingdom of God .

【눅9:1 JFB】Lu 9:1-6. Mission of the Twelve Apostles.

1. power and authority—He both qualified and authorized them.
【눅9:1 MHCC】Christ sent his twelve disciples abroad, who by this time were able to teach others what they had received from the Lord. They must not be anxious to commend themselves to people's esteem by outward appearance. They must go as they were. The Lord Jesus is the fountain of power and authority, to whom all creatures must, in one way or another, be subject; and if he goes with the word of his ministers in power, to deliver sinners from Satan's bondage, they may be sure that he will care for their wants. When truth and love thus go together, and yet the message of God is rejected and despised, it leaves men without excuse, and turns to a testimony against them. Herod's guilty conscience was ready to conclude that John was risen from the dead. He desired to see Jesus; and why did he not go and see him? Probably, because he thought it below him, or because he wished not to have any more reprovers of sin. Delaying it now, his heart was hardened, and when he did see Jesus, he was as much prejudiced against him as others, Lu 23:11.

【눅9:10 MHCC】The people followed Jesus, and though they came unseasonably, yet he gave them what they came for. He spake unto them of the kingdom of God. He healed those who had need of healing. And with five loaves of bread and two fishes, Christ fed five thousand men. He will not see those that fear him, and serve him faithfully, want any good thing. When we receive creature-comforts, we must acknowledge that we receive them from God, and that we are unworthy to receive them; that we owe them all, and all the comfort we have in them, to the mediation of Christ, by whom the curse is taken away. The blessing of Christ will make a little go a great way. He fills every hungry soul, abundantly satisfies it with the goodness of his house. Here were fragments taken up: in our Father's house there is bread enough, and to spare. We are not straitened, nor stinted in Christ.

【눅9:18 MHCC】It is an unspeakable comfort that our Lord Jesus is God's Anointed; this signifies that he was both appointed to be the Messiah, and qualified for it. Jesus discourses concerning his own sufferings and death. And so far must his disciples be from thinking how to prevent his sufferings, that they must prepare for their own. We often meet with crosses in the way of duty; and though we must not pull them upon our own heads, yet, when they are laid for us, we must take them up, and carry them after Christ. It is well or ill with us, according as it is well or ill with our souls. The body cannot be happy, if the soul be miserable in the other world; but the soul may be happy, though the body is greatly afflicted and oppressed in this world. We must never be ashamed of Christ and his gospel.
【눅9:24 JFB】24. will save—"Is minded to save," bent on saving. The pith of this maxim depends—as often in such weighty sayings (for example, "Let the dead bury the dead," 마8:22)—on the double sense attached to the word "life," a lower and a higher, the natural and the spiritual, temporal and eternal. An entire sacrifice of the lower, or a willingness to make it, is indispensable to the preservation of the higher life; and he who cannot bring himself to surrender the one for the sake of the other shall eventually lose both.
【눅9:26 JFB】26. ashamed of me, and of my words—The sense of shame is one of the strongest in our nature, one of the social affections founded on our love of reputation, which causes instinctive aversion to what is fitted to lower it, and was given us as a preservative from all that is properly shameful. When one is, in this sense of it, lost to shame, he is nearly past hope (Z전3:5; 렘6:15; 3:3). But when Christ and "His words"—Christianity, especially in its more spiritual and uncompromising features—are unpopular, the same instinctive desire to stand well with others begets the temptation to be ashamed of Him, which only the 'expulsive power' of a higher affection can effectually counteract.
Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh, &c.—He will render to that man his own treatment; He will disown him before the most august of all assemblies, and put him to "shame and everlasting contempt" (단12:2). "Oh shame, to be put to shame before God, Christ, and angels!" [Bengel].
【눅9:27 JFB】27. not taste of death fill they see the kingdom of God—"see it come with power" (막9:1); or see "the Son of man coming in His kingdom" (마16:28). The reference, beyond doubt, is to the firm establishment and victorious progress, in the lifetime of some then present, of that new Kingdom of Christ, which was destined to work the greatest of all changes on this earth, and be the grand pledge of His final coming in glory.
【눅9:28 JFB】Lu 9:28-36. Jesus Transfigured.
28. an eight days after these sayings—including the day on which this was spoken and that of the Transfiguration. Matthew and Mark say (마17:1; 막9:2) "after six days," excluding these two days. As the "sayings" so definitely connected with the transfiguration scene are those announcing His death—at which Peter and all the Twelve were so startled and scandalized—so this scene was designed to show to the eyes as well as the heart how glorious that death was in the view of Heaven.
Peter, James, and John—partners before in secular business; now sole witnesses of the resurrection of Jairus' daughter (막5:37), the transfiguration, and the agony in the garden (막14:33).
a mountain—not Tabor, according to long tradition, with which the facts ill comport, but some one near the lake.
to pray—for the period He had now reached was a critical and anxious one. (See on 마16:13). But who can adequately translate those "strong cryings and tears?" Methinks, as I steal by His side, I hear from Him these plaintive sounds, "Lord, who hath believed Our report? I am come unto Mine own and Mine own receive Me not; I am become a stranger unto My brethren, an alien to My mother's children: Consider Mine enemies, for they are many, and they hate Me with cruel hatred. Arise, O Lord, let not man prevail. Thou that dwellest between the cherubim, shine forth: Show Me a token for good: Father, glorify Thy name."
【눅9:28 MHCC】Christ's transfiguration was a specimen of that glory in which he will come to judge the world; and was an encouragement to his disciples to suffer for him. Prayer is a transfiguring, transforming duty, which makes the face to shine. Our Lord Jesus, even in his transfiguration, was willing to speak concerning his death and sufferings. In our greatest glories on earth, let us remember that in this world we have no continuing city. What need we have to pray to God for quickening grace, to make us lively! Yet that the disciples might be witnesses of this sign from heaven, after awhile they became awake, so that they were able to give a full account of what passed. But those know not what they say, that talk of making tabernacles on earth for glorified saints in heaven.
【눅9:29 JFB】29. as he prayed, the fashion, &c.—Before He cried He was answered, and while He was yet speaking He was heard. Blessed interruption to prayer this! Thanks to God, transfiguring manifestations are not quite strangers here. Ofttimes in the deepest depths, out of groanings which cannot be uttered, God's dear children are suddenly transported to a kind of heaven upon earth, and their soul is made as the chariots of Amminadab. Their prayers fetch down such light, strength, holy gladness, as make their face to shine, putting a kind of celestial radiance upon it (고후3:18, with 출34:29-35).
raiment white, &c.—Matthew says, "His face did shine as the sun" (마17:2), and Mark says (막9:3), "His raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow, so as no fuller on earth can white them" (막9:3). The light, then, it would seem, shone not upon Him from without, but out of Him from within; He was all irradiated, was in one blaze of celestial glory. What a contrast to that "visage more marred than men, and His form than the sons of men!" (사52:14).
【눅9:30 JFB】30, 31. there talked with him two men … Moses and Elias … appeared in glory—"Who would have believed these were not angels had not their human names been subjoined?" [Bengel]. (Compare 행1:10; 막16:5). Moses represented "the law," Elijah "the prophets," and both together the whole testimony of the Old Testament Scriptures, and the Old Testament saints, to Christ; now not borne in a book, but by living men, not to a coming, but a come Messiah, visibly, for they "appeared," and audibly, for they "spake."

of his decease—"departure"; beautiful euphemism (softened term) for death, which Peter, who witnessed the scene, uses to express his own expected death, and the use of which single term seems to have recalled the whole by a sudden rush of recollection, and occasioned that delightful allusion to this scene which we find in 벧후1:15-18.
which he should accomplish—"was to fulfil."
at Jerusalem—Mark the historical character and local features which Christ's death assumed to these glorified men—as important as it is charming—and see on Lu 2:11. What now may be gathered from this statement? (1) That a dying Messiah is the great article of the true Jewish theology. For a long time the Church had fallen clean away from the faith of this article, and even from a preparedness to receive it. But here we have that jewel raked out of the dunghill of Jewish traditions, and by the true representatives of the Church of old made the one subject of talk with Christ Himself. (2) The adoring gratitude of glorified men for His undertaking to accomplish such a decease; their felt dependence upon it for the glory in which they appeared; their profound interest in the progress of it, their humble solaces and encouragements to go through with it; and their sense of its peerless and overwhelming glory. "Go, matchless, adored One, a Lamb to the slaughter! rejected of men, but chosen of God and precious; dishonored, abhorred, and soon to be slain by men, but worshipped by cherubim, ready to be greeted by all heaven. In virtue of that decease we are here; our all is suspended on it and wrapped up in it. Thine every step is watched by us with ineffable interest; and though it were too high an honor to us to be permitted to drop a word of cheer into that precious but now clouded spirit, yet, as the first-fruits of harvest; the very joy set before Him, we cannot choose but tell Him that what is the depth of shame to Him is covered with glory in the eyes of Heaven, that the Cross to Him is the Crown to us, that that 'decease' is all our salvation and all our desire." And who can doubt that such a scene did minister deep cheer to that spirit? It is said they "talked" not to Him, but "with Him"; and if they told Him how glorious His decease was, might He not fitly reply, "I know it, but your voice, as messengers from heaven come down to tell it Me, is music in Mine ears."

saw his glory, &c.—The emphasis lies on "saw," qualifying them to become "eye-witnesses of His majesty" (벧후1:16).

What mischief Satan does where he gets possession! But happy those that have access to Christ! He can do that for us which his disciples cannot. A word from Christ healed the child; and when our children recover from sickness, it is comfortable to receive them as healed by the hand of Christ.

By comparing 마17:22, and 막9:30, we gather that this had been the subject of conversation between the Twelve and their Master as they journeyed along.

A little child is the emblem by which Christ teaches us simplicity and humility. What greater honour can any man attain to in this world, than to be received by men as a messenger of God and Christ; and to have God and Christ own themselves received and welcomed in him! If ever any society of Christians in this world, had reason to silence those not of their own communion, the twelve disciples at this time had; yet Christ warned them not to do the like again. Those may be found faithful followers of Christ, and may be accepted of him, who do not follow with us.

【눅9:49 JFB】49, 50. John answered, &c.—The link of connection here with the foregoing context lies in the words "in My name" (Lu 9:48). "Oh, as to that," said John, young, warm, but not sufficiently apprehending Christ's teaching in these things, "we saw one casting out devils in Thy name, and we forbade him: Were we wrong?" "Ye were wrong." "But we did because he followeth not us,'" "No matter. For (1) There is no man which shall do a miracle in My name that can lightly [soon] speak evil of Me' [막9:39]. And (2) If such a person cannot be supposed to be 'against us,' you are to consider him 'for us.'" Two principles of immense importance. Christ does not say this man should not have followed "with them," but simply teaches how he was to be regarded though he did not—as a reverer of His name and a promoter of His cause. Surely this condemns not only those horrible attempts by force to shut up all within one visible pale of discipleship, which have deluged Christendom with blood in Christ's name, but the same spirit in its milder form of proud ecclesiastic scowl upon all who "after the form which they call a sect (as the word signifies, 행24:14), do so worship the God of their fathers." Visible unity in Christ's Church is devoutly to be sought, but this is not the way to it. See the noble spirit of Moses (민11:24-29).

51. the time was come—rather, "the days were being fulfilled," or approaching their fulfilment.
that he should be received up—"of His assumption," meaning His exaltation to the Father; a sublime expression, taking the sweep of His whole career, as if at one bound He was about to vault into glory. The work of Christ in the flesh is here divided into two great stages; all that preceded this belonging to the one, and all that follows it to the other. During the one, He formally "came to His own," and "would have gathered them"; during the other, the awful consequences of "His own receiving Him not" rapidly revealed themselves.
he steadfastly set his face—the "He" here is emphatic—"He Himself then." See His own prophetic language, "I have set my face like a flint" (사50:7).
go to Jerusalem—as His goal, but including His preparatory visits to it at the feasts of tabernacles and of dedication (요7:2, 10; 10:22, 23), and all the intermediate movements and events.
【눅9:51 MHCC】The disciples did not consider that the conduct of the Samaritans was rather the effect of national prejudices and bigotry, than of enmity to the word and worship of God; and through they refused to receive Christ and his disciples, they did not ill use or injure them, so that the case was widely different from that of Ahaziah and Elijah. Nor were they aware that the gospel dispensation was to be marked by miracles of mercy. But above all, they were ignorant of the prevailing motives of their own hearts, which were pride and carnal ambition. Of this our Lord warned them. It is easy for us to say, Come, see our zeal for the Lord! and to think we are very faithful in his cause, when we are seeking our own objects, and even doing harm instead of good to others.

But if they were asked to prepare quarters for the Messiah, in the person of one whose "face was as though He would go to Jerusalem," their national prejudices would be raised at so marked a slight upon their claims. The sparks of unholy indignation would seize readily enough on this example of Elias, though our Lord's rebuke (as is plain from Lu 9:56) is directed to the principle involved rather than the animal heat which doubtless prompted the reference. "It is a golden sentence of Tillotson, Let us never do anything for religion which is contrary to religion" [Webster and Wilkinson].

【눅9:57 MHCC】Here is one that is forward to follow Christ, but seems to have been hasty and rash, and not to have counted the cost. If we mean to follow Christ, we must lay aside the thoughts of great things in the world. Let us not try to join the profession of Christianity, with seeking after worldly advantages. Here is another that seems resolved to follow Christ, but he begs a short delay. To this man Christ first gave the call; he said to him, Follow me. Religion teaches us to be kind and good, to show piety at home, and to requite our parents; but we must not make these an excuse for neglecting our duty to God. Here is another that is willing to follow Christ, but he must have a little time to talk with his friends about it, and to set in order his household affairs, and give directions concerning them. He seemed to have worldly concerns more upon his heart than he ought to have, and he was willing to enter into a temptation leading him from his purpose of following Christ. No one can do any business in a proper manner, if he is attending to other things. Those who begin with the work of God, must resolve to go on, or they will make nothing of it. Looking back, leads to drawing back, and drawing back is to perdition. He only that endures to the end shall be saved.

61. I will follow … but—The second disciple had a "but" too—a difficulty in the way just then. Yet the different treatment of the two cases shows how different was the spirit of the two, and to that our Lord addressed Himself. The case of Elisha (왕상19:19-21), though apparently similar to this, will be found quite different from the "looking back" of this case, the best illustration of which is that of those Hindu converts of our day who, when once persuaded to leave their spiritual fathers in order to "bid them farewell which are at home at their house," very rarely return to them.
