■ 고린도후서 9장
1. 성도를 섬기는 일에 대하여 내가 너희에게 쓸 필요가 없나니
For as touching the ministering to the saints , it is superfluous for me to write to you :

2. 이는 내가 너희의 원함을 앎이라 내가 너희를 위하여 마게도냐인들에게 아가야에서는 일 년 전부터 예비하였다 자랑하였는데 과연 너희 열심이 퍽 많은 사람들을 격동시켰느니라
For I know the forwardness of your mind , for which I boast of you to them of Macedonia , that Achaia was ready a year ago ; and your zeal hath provoked very many .
3. 그런데 이 형제들을 보낸 것은 이 일에 너희를 위한 우리의 자랑이 헛되지 않고 내 말한 것 같이 준비하게 하려 함이라
Yet have I sent the brethren , lest our boasting of you should be in vain in this behalf ; that , as I said , ye may be ready :
4. 혹 마게도냐인들이 나와 함께 가서 너희의 준비치 아니한 것을 보면 너희는 고사하고 우리가 이 믿던 것에 부끄러움을 당할까 두려워하노라
Lest haply if they of Macedonia come with me , and find you unprepared , we (that we say not , ye ) should be ashamed in this same confident boasting .
5. 이러므로 내가 이 형제들로 먼저 너희에게 가서 너희의 전에 약속한 연보를 미리 준비케 하도록 권면하는 것이 필요한 줄 생각하였노니 이렇게 준비하여야 참 연보답고 억지가 아니니라
Therefore I thought it necessary to exhort the brethren , that they would go before unto you , and make up beforehand your bounty , whereof ye had notice before , that the same might be ready , as a matter of bounty , and not as of covetousness .
6. 이것이 곧 적게 심는 자는 적게 거두고 많이 심는 자는 많이 거둔다 하는 말이로다
But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly ; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully .
7. 각각 그 마음에 정한 대로 할 것이요 인색함으로나 억지로 하지 말지니 하나님은 즐겨 내는 자를 사랑하시느니라
Every man according as he purposeth in his heart , so let him give; not grudgingly , or of necessity : for God loveth a cheerful giver .
8. 하나님이 능히 모든 은혜를 너희에게 넘치게 하시나니 이는 너희로 모든 일에 항상 모든 것이 넉넉하여 모든 착한 일을 넘치게 하게 하려 하심이라
And God is able to make all grace abound toward you ; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work :
9. 기록한 바 저가 흩어 가난한 자들에게 주었으니 그의 의가 영원토록 있느니라 함과 같으니라
(As it is written , He hath dispersed abroad ; he hath given to the poor : his righteousness remaineth for ever .
10. 심는 자에게 씨와 먹을 양식을 주시는 이가 너희 심을 것을 주사 풍성하게 하시고 너희 의의 열매를 더하게 하시리니
Now he that ministereth seed to the sower both minister bread for your food , and multiply your seed sown , and increase the fruits of your righteousness ;)
11. 너희가 모든 일에 부요하여 너그럽게 연보를 함은 저희로 우리로 말미암아 하나님께 감사하게 하는 것이라
Being enriched in every thing to all bountifulness , which causeth through us thanksgiving to God .
12. 이 봉사의 직무가 성도들의 부족한 것만 보충할 뿐 아니라 사람들의 하나님께 드리는 많은 감사를 인하여 넘쳤느니라
For the administration of this service not only supplieth the want of the saints , but is abundant also by many thanksgivings unto God ;
13. 이 직무로 증거를 삼아 너희의 그리스도의 복음을 진실히 믿고 복종하는 것과 저희와 모든 사람을 섬기는 너희의 후한 연보를 인하여 하나님께 영광을 돌리고
Whiles by the experiment of this ministration they glorify God for your professed subjection unto the gospel of Christ , and for your liberal distribution unto them , and unto all men;
14. 또 저희가 너희를 위하여 간구하며 하나님의 너희에게 주신 지극한 은혜를 인하여 너희를 사모하느니라
And by their prayer for you , which long after you for the exceeding grace of God in you .
15. 말할 수 없는 그의 은사를 인하여 하나님께 감사하노라
Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift .

【고후9:1 JFB】고후9:1-15. Reasons for His Sending Titus. The Greater Their Bountifulness, the More Shall Be the Return of Blessing to Them, and Thanksgiving to God.
1. For—connected with 고후8:16: "Show love to the messengers of the churches; for as concerns the ministration for the saints, it is superfluous for me to write to you who are so forward already."
write—emphatical: It is superfluous to "write," for you will have witnesses present [Bengel].
【고후9:1 CWC】The mother church at Jerusalem was passing through stormy days, and its common chest was replenished by all the daughter churches. Macedonia, in its poverty, had contributed liberally but the wealthy and flourishing Corinthians had been backward, and the apostle devotes nearly one-sixth of his present letter to arguments and pleadings for greater generosity on their part. He enjoins the duty of giving:
1. By the example of the churches in Macedonia (8:1-4). They were poor, yet lavish. The effect of divine grace on their hearts.
2. By the sense of congruity in the Christian life (8:7). They already abounded in other gifts such as faith, utterance and knowledge; liberality therefore was expected. Its absence would be a defect in the symmetry of their spiritual experience.
3. As a proof of their love and gratitude to Jesus Christ (8:8, 9), who, though rich, yet for their sakes had become poor.
4. In consideration of what they professed to be willing to do. Regard for their promises (8:10, 11).
5. The offering would be appreciated not according to its size, but the spirit in which it was given (8:12).
6. The care of the poor saints should not fall on a few but all should be equally burdened (8: 13-15).
7. The apostle's honor was at stake (8:24, al아9:3, 4). He had boasted of their willingness.
8. As they sowed they would reap (9:6).
9. God was able to reward them (9:8-11).
10. They would thus glorify God (9:13).
11. They would thus secure the prayers and love of the saints (9:14).
The foregoing is abbreviated from "Synthetic Bible Studies," but there is further homiletic value in the following division of the chapters in the Scofield Bible: The example of Macedonia (8:1-6); the exhortation, (vv. 7-15); the messengers, (8:9-16:5); the encouragement (vv. 6-15). From the same source we get a summing up of the Christian doctrine of giving, as follows:
(1) It is a "grace," i. e. a disposition created by the Spirit (8, 7). (2) In contrast with the law, which imposed giving as a divine requirement, it is voluntary, and a test of sincerity and love (8:8-12; 9:1, 2, 5, 7). (3) The privilege is universal, belonging, according to ability, to rich and poor (8:1-3, 12-15. Cf. 고전16:1, 2). (4) It is to be proportioned to income (8:12-14, Cf. 고전16:2). The O. T. proportion was the tithe, a proportion which antedates the law (창14:20). (5) Its rewards are (a) joy (8:2); (b) increased ability to give in proportion to that which has been already given (9:7-11); (c) increased thankfulness to God (9:12); (d) God and the gospel glorified (9: 13, 14).
【고후9:1 MHCC】When we would have others do good, we must act toward them prudently and tenderly, and give them time. Christians should consider what is for the credit of their profession, and endeavour to adorn the doctrine of God their Saviour in all things. The duty of ministering to the saints is so plain, that there would seem no need to exhort Christians to it; yet self-love contends so powerfully against the love of Christ, that it is often necessary to stir up their minds by way of remembrance.
【고후9:2 JFB】2. ready a year ago—to send off the money, owing to the apostle's former exhortation (고전16:1, 2).
your zeal—Greek, "the zeal from you," that is, on your part; propagated from you to others.
provoked—that is, stimulated.
very many—Greek, "the greater number," namely, of the Macedonians.
【고후9:3 JFB】3. have I sent—we should say, "I send"; whereas the ancients put it in the past, the time which it would be by the time that the letter arrived.
the brethren—(고후8:18, 22)—Titus and the two others.
should be in vain in this behalf—"should be proved futile in this particular," however true in general (고후7:4). A tacit compliment, softening the sharp monition.
as I said—as I was saying (고후9:2).
【고후9:4 JFB】4. if they of Macedonia—rather as Greek, "if Macedonians."
unprepared—with your collection; see 고후9:2, "ready," Greek, "prepared."
we, not to say ye—Ye would naturally feel more ashamed for yourselves, than we (who boasted of you) would for you.
confident boasting—The oldest manuscripts read simply "confidence," namely, in your liberality.
【고후9:5 JFB】5. that they would go before—Translate, "that they should," &c.
whereof ye had notice before—rather, "promised before"; "long announced by me to the Macedonians" (고후9:2) [Bengel]. "Your promised bounty" [Ellicott and others].
not as of covetousness—Translate, "not as matter of covetousness," which it would be, if you gave niggardly.
【고후9:6 JFB】6. I say—Ellicott and others supply the ellipsis thus: "But remember this."
bountifully—literally, "with," or "in blessings." The word itself implies a beneficent spirit in the giver (compare 고후9:7, end), and the plural implies the abundance and liberality of the gifts. "The reaping shall correspond to the proportions and spirit of the sowing" [Bengel]. Compare 겔34:26, "Showers of blessing."
【고후9:6 MHCC】Money bestowed in charity, may to the carnal mind seem thrown away, but when given from proper principles, it is seed sown, from which a valuable increase may be expected. It should be given carefully. Works of charity, like other good works, should be done with thought and design. Due thought, as to our circumstances, and those we are about to relieve, will direct our gifts for charitable uses. Help should be given freely, be it more or less; not grudgingly, but cheerfully. While some scatter, and yet increase; others withhold more than is meet, and it tends to poverty. If we had more faith and love, we should waste less on ourselves, and sow more in hope of a plentiful increase. Can a man lose by doing that with which God is pleased? He is able to make all grace abound towards us, and to abound in us; to give a large increase of spiritual and of temporal good things. He can make us to have enough in all things; and to be content with what we have. God gives not only enough for ourselves, but that also wherewith we may supply the wants of others, and this should be as seed to be sown. We must show the reality of our subjection to the gospel, by works of charity. This will be for the credit of our profession, and to the praise and glory of God. Let us endeavour to copy the example of Christ, being unwearied in doing good, and deeming it more blessed to give than to receive. Blessed be God for the unspeakable gift of his grace, whereby he enables and inclines some of his people to bestow upon others, and others to be grateful for it; and blessed be his glorious name to all eternity, for Jesus Christ, that inestimable gift of his love, through whom this and every other good thing, pertaining to life and godliness, are freely given unto us, beyond all expression, measure, or bounds.
【고후9:7 JFB】7. according as he purposeth in his heart—Let the full consent of the free will go with the gift [Alford]. Opposed to "of necessity," as "grudgingly" is opposed to "a cheerful giver" (잠22:9; 11:25; 사32:8).
【고후9:8 JFB】8. all grace—even in external goods, and even while ye bestow on others [Bengel].
that—"in order that." God's gifts are bestowed on us, not that we may have them to ourselves, but that we may the more "abound in good works" to others.
sufficiency—so as not to need the help of others, having yourselves from God "bread for your food" (고후9:10).
in all things—Greek, "in everything."
every good work—of charity to others, which will be "your seed sown" (고후9:10).
【고후9:9 JFB】9. As it is written—realizing the highly blessed character portrayed in 시112:9.
He—the "good man" (시112:5).
dispersed—as seed sown with full and open hand, without anxious thought in what direction each grain may fall. It is implied also that he has always what he may disperse [Bengel]. So in 시112:9.
the poor—The Greek word is found here only in New Testament, "one in straitened circumstances, who earns his bread by labor." The word usually employed means "one so poor as to live by begging."
his righteousness—Here "beneficence": the evidence of his being righteous before God and man. Compare 신24:13; 마6:1, "alms"; Greek, "righteousness."
remaineth—unexhausted and unfailing.
【고후9:10 JFB】10. Translate, as in 사55:10, "He that ministereth (supplieth) seed to the sower and bread for food" (literally, "bread for eating").
minister—rather future, as the oldest manuscripts, "Shall minister (supply) and multiply."
your seed—your means for liberality.
the fruits of your righteousness—the heavenly rewards for your Christian charity (마10:42). Righteousness shall be itself the reward, even as it is the thing rewarded (호10:12; 마5:6; 6:33).

bountifulness—Greek, "single-minded liberality." Translated "simplicity," 롬12:8.
causeth through us—literally, "worketh through us"; that is, through our instrumentality as the distributors.
thanksgiving—on the part of the recipients.
【고후9:12 JFB】12.Greek, "The ministration of this public service (on your part) is not only still further supplying the wants of the saints (besides the supplies from other quarters), but is abounding also (namely, in respect to relieving the necessities of others in poverty) through many thanksgivings to God."
【고후9:13 JFB】13. by—through occasion of.
experiment—Translate, "the experience" [Ellicott and others]. Or, "the experimental proof" of your Christian character, afforded by "this ministration."
they—the recipients.
for your professed subjection—Greek, "for the subjection of your profession"; that is, your subjection in accordance with your profession, in relation to the Gospel. Ye yield yourselves in willing subjection to the Gospel precepts, evinced in acts, as well as in profession.
your liberal distribution—Greek, "the liberality of your contribution in relation to them," &c.
【고후9:14 JFB】14. Translate, "Themselves also with prayer for you, longing after you on account of the exceeding grace of God (resting) upon you." English Version is, however, good sense: They glorify God (고후9:13) by the experimental proof, &c., "and by their prayer for you." But the Greek favors the former.
