  Furthermore David the king said unto all the congregation , Solomon my son , whom alone God hath chosen , is yet young and tender , and the work is great : for the palace is not for man , but for the Lord God .

  Now I have prepared with all my might for the house of my God the gold for things to be made of gold , and the silver for things of silver , and the brass for things of brass , the iron for things of iron , and wood for things of wood ; onyx stones , and stones to be set , glistering stones , and of divers colours , and all manner of precious stones , and marble stones in abundance .

  Moreover, because I have set my affection to the house of my God , I have of mine own proper good , of gold and silver , which I have given to the house of my God , over and above all that I have prepared for the holy house ,

 

4. 곧 오빌의 금 삼천 달란트와 천은 칠천 달란트라 모든 전 벽에 입히며

  Even three thousand talents of gold , of the gold of Ophir , and seven thousand talents of refined silver , to overlay the walls of the houses withal:

  The gold for things of gold , and the silver for things of silver , and for all manner of work to be made by the hands of artificers . And who then is willing to consecrate his service this day unto the Lord ?

  Then the chief of the fathers and princes of the tribes of Israel , and the captains of thousands and of hundreds , with the rulers of the king’s work , offered willingly ,

  And gave for the service of the house of God of gold five thousand talents and ten thousand drams , and of silver ten thousand talents , and of brass eighteen thousand talents , and one hundred thousand talents of iron .

 

8. 무릇 보석이 있는 자는 게르손 사람 여히엘의 손에 부쳐 여호와의 전 곳간에 드렸더라

  And they with whom precious stones were found gave them to the treasure of the house of the Lord , by the hand of Jehiel the Gershonite .

 

9. 백성이 자기의 즐거이 드림으로 기뻐하였으니 곧 저희가 성심으로 여호와께 즐거이 드림이며 다윗 왕도 기쁨을 이기지 못하여 하니라

  Then the people rejoiced , for that they offered willingly , because with perfect heart they offered willingly to the Lord : and David the king also rejoiced with great joy .

 

10. 다윗이 온 회중 앞에서 여호와를 송축하여 가로되 우리 조상 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와여 주는 영원히 송축을 받으시옵소서

  Wherefore David blessed the Lord before all the congregation : and David said , Blessed be thou, Lord God of Israel our father , for ever and ever .

 

11. 여호와여 광대하심과 권능과 영광과 이김과 위엄이 다 주께 속하였사오니 천지에 있는 것이 다 주의 것이로소이다 여호와여 주권도 주께 속하였사오니 주는 높으사 만유의 머리심이니이다

  Thine, O Lord , is the greatness , and the power , and the glory , and the victory , and the majesty : for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom , O Lord , and thou art exalted as head above all.

 

12. 부와 귀가 주께로 말미암고 또 주는 만유의 주재가 되사 손에 권세와 능력이 있사오니 모든 자를 크게 하심과 강하게 하심이 주의 손에 있나이다

  Both riches and honour come of thee , and thou reignest over all; and in thine hand is power and might ; and in thine hand it is to make great , and to give strength unto all.

 

13. 우리 하나님이여 이제 우리가 주께 감사하오며 주의 영화로운 이름을 찬양하나이다

  Now therefore, our God , we thank thee, and praise thy glorious name .

 

14. 나와 나의 백성이 무엇이관대 이처럼 즐거운 마음으로 드릴 힘이 있었나이까 모든 것이 주께로 말미암았사오니 우리가 주의 손에서 받은 것으로 주께 드렸을 뿐이니이다

  But who am I, and what is my people , that we should be able to offer so willingly after this sort? for all things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee.

 

15. 주 앞에서는 우리가 우리 열조와 다름이 없이 나그네와 우거한 자라 세상에 있는 날이 그림자 같아서 머무름이 없나이다

  For we are strangers before thee, and sojourners , as were all our fathers : our days on the earth are as a shadow , and there is none abiding .

 

16. 우리 하나님 여호와여 우리가 주의 거룩한 이름을 위하여 전을 건축하려고 미리 저축한 이 모든 물건이 다 주의 손에서 왔사오니 다 주의 것이니이다

  O Lord our God , all this store that we have prepared to build thee an house for thine holy name cometh of thine hand , and is all thine own.

 

17. 나의 하나님이여 주께서 마음을 감찰하시고 정직을 기뻐하시는 줄 내가 아나이다 내가 정직한 마음으로 이 모든 것을 즐거이 드렸사오며 이제 내가 또 여기 있는 주의 백성이 주께 즐거이 드리는 것을 보오니 심히 기쁘도소이다

  I know also, my God , that thou triest the heart , and hast pleasure in uprightness . As for me, in the uprightness of mine heart I have willingly offered all these things: and now have I seen with joy thy people , which are present here, to offer willingly unto thee.

 

18. 우리 열조 아브라함과 이삭과 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와여 주께서 이것을 주의 백성의 심중에 영원히 두어 생각하게 하시고 그 마음을 예비하여 주께로 돌아오게 하옵시며

  O Lord God of Abraham , Isaac , and of Israel , our fathers , keep this for ever in the imagination of the thoughts of the heart of thy people , and prepare their heart unto thee:

 

19. 또 내 아들 솔로몬에게 정성된 마음을 주사 주의 계명과 법도와 율례를 지켜 이 모든 일을 행하게 하시고 내가 위하여 예비한 것으로 전을 건축하게 하옵소서

  And give unto Solomon my son a perfect heart , to keep thy commandments , thy testimonies , and thy statutes , and to do all these things, and to build the palace , for the which I have made provision .

 

20. 다윗이 온 회중에게 이르되 너희는 너희 하나님 여호와를 송축하라 하매 회중이 그 열조의 하나님 여호와를 송축하고 머리를 숙여 여호와와 왕에게 절하고

  And David said to all the congregation , Now bless the Lord your God . And all the congregation blessed the Lord God of their fathers , and bowed down their heads , and worshipped the Lord , and the king .

 

21. 이튿날 여호와께 제사를 드리고 또 번제를 드리니 수송아지가 일천이요 수양이 일천이요 어린 양이 일천이요 또 그 전제라 온 이스라엘을 위하여 풍성한 제물을 드리고

  And they sacrificed sacrifices unto the Lord , and offered burnt offerings unto the Lord , on the morrow after that day , even a thousand bullocks , a thousand rams , and a thousand lambs , with their drink offerings , and sacrifices in abundance for all Israel :

 

22. 이 날에 무리가 크게 기뻐하여 여호와 앞에서 먹으며 마셨더라 무리가 다윗의 아들 솔로몬으로 다시 왕을 삼아 기름을 부어 여호와께 돌려 주권자가 되게 하고 사독에게도 기름을 부어 제사장이 되게 하니라

  And did eat and drink before the Lord on that day with great gladness . And they made Solomon the son of David king the second time , and anointed him unto the Lord to be the chief governor , and Zadok to be priest .

 

23. 솔로몬이 여호와께서 주신 위에 앉아 부친 다윗을 이어 왕이 되어 형통하니 온 이스라엘이 그 명령을 순종하며

  Then Solomon sat on the throne of the Lord as king instead of David his father , and prospered ; and all Israel obeyed him.

 

24. 모든 방백과 용사와 다윗 왕의 여러 아들이 솔로몬 왕에게 복종하니

  And all the princes , and the mighty men , and all the sons likewise of king David , submitted themselves unto Solomon the king .

 

25. 여호와께서 솔로몬으로 이스라엘 무리의 목전에 심히 존대케 하시고 또 왕의 위엄을 주사 그 전 이스라엘 모든 왕보다 뛰어나게 하셨더라

  And the Lord magnified Solomon exceedingly in the sight of all Israel , and bestowed upon him such royal majesty as had not been on any king before him in Israel .

 

26. 이새의 아들 다윗이 온 이스라엘의 왕이 되어

  Thus David the son of Jesse reigned over all Israel .

 

27. 이스라엘을 치리한 날짜는 사십 년이라 헤브론에서 칠 년을 치리하였고 예루살렘에서 삼십삼 년을 치리하였더라

  And the time that he reigned over Israel was forty years ; seven years reigned he in Hebron , and thirty and three years reigned he in Jerusalem .

 

28. 저가 나이 많아 늙도록 부하고 존귀하다가 죽으매 그 아들 솔로몬이 대신하여 왕이 되니라

  And he died in a good old age , full of days , riches , and honour : and Solomon his son reigned in his stead.

  Now the acts of David the king , first and last , behold, they are written in the book of Samuel the seer , and in the book of Nathan the prophet , and in the book of Gad the seer ,

【대상29:1 JFB】대상29:1-9. David Causes the Princes and People to Offer for the House of God.
1, 2. Solomon … is yet young and tender—Though Solomon was very young when he was raised to the sovereign power, his kingdom escaped the woe pronounced (전10:16). Mere childhood in a prince is not always a misfortune to a nation, as there are instances of the government being wisely administered during a minority. Solomon himself is a most illustrious proof that a young prince may prove a great blessing; for when he was but a mere child, with respect to his age, no nation was happier. His father, however, made this address before Solomon was endowed with the divine gift of wisdom, and David's reference to his son's extreme youth, in connection with the great national undertaking he had been divinely appointed to execute, was to apologize to this assembly of the estates—or, rather, to assign the reason of his elaborate preparations for the work.

1. The Downfall of Saul, c. 10.
In reading this chapter with whose general contents we became familiar in 1 Samuel 31, it is important to note the inspired comment at its close (vv.
13, 14).
2. David's Heroes, cc. 11, 12.
In the history of David in this book, the writer dwells chiefly on its prosperous side, passing over the rest as lightly as possible. His anointing at Hebron (vv. 1-3), reveals nothing of what we learned earlier of the rival kingdom of the house of Saul, and the seven years before his exaltation over all Israel. Again, in the list of warriors (11:10-47), there is an omission of Joab's treachery and barbarous conduct in the cases of Abner, Uriah and Absalom.
Chapter 12 contains a supplemental list of braves who attached themselves to David earlier, and during the days of Saul, and of whom we have no record until now.
3. David's Victories and Festivals, cc. 13-16.
These begin with the bringing up of the ark as far as the house of Obed-edom (c. 13). Then follows the account of battles with the Philistines (c. 14), which occupies a different position from that in 2 Samuel 5, the reason for which can only be conjectured. After this the ark is brought up to Jerusalem (cc. 15, 16), the record being more detailed than in Samuel. Note, for example, the preparation and act of transfer. A tent is erected, (15:1) possibly in the vicinity of the palace, after the model of the old tabernacle. Then a consultation is held (v. 2), the representative men are assembled (v. 3), the bearers chosen (vv. 12-15), the singers appointed (vv. 16-24). Then the act itself, with its rejoicings, sacrifices and distribution of gifts (15:25-16:3). Then the initial service and the psalm of thanksgiving (vv. 4-36).
Another thus analyzes the eight strophes of this psalm: The first, summons to praise (vv. 8-11); the second, to think on the wonders and judgments of the Lord (vv. 12-14); the third, to think of the covenant made with the fathers (vv. 15-18); the fourth, gives the reasons to remember this covenant (vv. 19-22); the fifth, affirms that all the world shall concur in the greatness and glory of God (vv. 23-27); the sixth, all nations shall worship Him (vv. 28-30); the seventh, the inanimate creation will exult before Him (vv. 31-33); the eighth, closes with a repeated summons to praise and prayer (vv. 34-36).
4. David and The Temple, cc. 17-22.
Except as to its location the record in chapter 17 is in substance the same as in 2 Samuel 7. The "group of war reports," cc. 18-20, runs parallel to four sections in 2 Samuel which in that case are separated from one another by other matters. The story of the plague following the census (c. 21), contains some deviations from that in Samuel, as for example, its position in the record, the fact that the offence was instigated by Satan, that Benjamin and Levi were not numbered, and that the threshing-floor was thereafter the constant place of sacrifice by David. These things are additions and not contradictions. As to the last named, the words in verse 28, "At that time * * * he sacrificed there," have been rendered by Luther and others, "was wont to offer there," meaning that he did it repeatedly, frequently. In an earlier lesson it was stated that this threshing-floor subsequently became the site of Solomon's temple.
After the episode represented by these chapters the author returns to the subject of the temple (c. 22), speaking of David's preparation of the materials (vv. 1-5), his charge to Solomon (vv. 6-16), and finally his appeal to the princes to assist (vv. 17-19).
6. The Temple and Military Officers, cc. 23-27.
The opening comment of this section gives the reason for what follows. David was old and felt the need of putting things in readiness for his son (v. 1). There are two things that concern him chiefly, the worship of God and the strengthening of the kingdom, and it is significant that the worship of God receives attention first.
The chapters arrange themselves thus: Chapter 23 deals with the Levites, their number and classification for work; 24 does the same for the priests, except that the closing verses refer again to the Levites; 25 speaks of the singers; 26 of the porters, treasurers and other business officers; and 27 of the army, including its divisions and commanders.
7. David's Last Directions and Death, cc, 28, 29.
The last directions of David concern the building of the temple where all the princes, the captains, the courtiers and the heroes are addressed (vv. 1, 2), and Solomon in their presence is invested with power and authority as his successor (w. 5-21).
Note the words in verse 12. "And the pattern of all that he had by the Spirit." We use a capital "S" believing the Holy Spirit to be intended, and that the words should be read in the light of verse 19, "All this, the Lord made me understand in writing by His hand upon me, even all the works of this pattern." Are we not to understand, difficult as the words may be, that as God revealed the original of the temple to Moses in the wilderness when He revealed the tabernacle, so now also He controlled and directed David when the time came for the actual erection of the temple?
Do not pass chapter 29 carelessly. Note David's example of giving (vv. 3-5), and the lever it affords to make an appeal to others. See the working of the Spirit of God among the people in the gladness of it all (v. 9), a fact David recognizes and for which he praises God, verse 10 and the following.
When it says "they made Solomon king the second time" (v. 22), it is in contrast with 23:1. In that case the first proclamation was made, but now the actual anointing took place. (Compare 왕상1:32 and the following verses.)

 

【대상29:1 MHCC】What is done in works of piety and charity, should be done willingly, not by constraint; for God loves a cheerful giver. David set a good example. This David offered, not from constraint, or for show; but because he had set his affection to the house of God, and thought he could never do enough towards promoting that good work. Those who would draw others to good, must lead the way themselves.

 

【대상29:3 JFB】3, 4. Moreover … I have of mine own proper good, &c.—In addition to the immense amount of gold and silver treasure which David had already bequeathed for various uses in the service of the temple, he now made an additional contribution destined to a specific purpose—that of overlaying the walls of the house. This voluntary gift was from the private fortune of the royal donor, and had been selected with the greatest care. The gold was "the gold of Ophir," then esteemed the purest and finest in the world (욥22:24; 28:16; 사13:12). The amount was three thousand talents of gold and seven thousand talents of refined silver.

 

【대상29:5 JFB】5. who then is willing to consecrate his service—Hebrew, "fill his hand"; that is, make an offering (출32:29; 레8:33; 왕상13:33). The meaning is, that whoever would contribute voluntarily, as he had done, would be offering a freewill offering to the Lord. It was a sacrifice which every one of them could make, and in presenting which the offerer himself would be the priest. David, in asking freewill offerings for the temple, imitated the conduct of Moses in reference to the tabernacle (출25:1-8).

10-19. Wherefore David blessed the Lord—This beautiful thanksgiving prayer was the effusion overflowing with gratitude and delight at seeing the warm and widespread interest that was now taken in forwarding the favorite project of his life. Its piety is displayed in the fervor of devotional feeling—in the ascription of all worldly wealth and greatness to God as the giver, in tracing the general readiness in contributing to the influence of His grace, in praying for the continuance of this happy disposition among the people, and in solemnly and earnestly commending the young king and his kingdom to the care and blessing of God.

 

【대상29:10 MHCC】We cannot form a right idea of the magnificence of the temple, and the buildings around it, about which such quantities of gold and silver were employed. But the unsearchable riches of Christ exceed the splendour of the temple, infinitely more than that surpassed the meanest cottage on earth. Instead of boasting of these large oblations, David gave solemn thanks to the Lord. All they gave for the Lord's temple was his own; if they attempted to keep it, death would soon have removed them from it. The only use they could make of it to their real advantage, was, to consecrate it to the service of Him who gave it.

 

【대상29:16 JFB】16. all this store that we have prepared—It may be useful to exhibit a tabular view of the treasure laid up and contributions stated by the historian as already made towards the erection of the proposed temple. Omitting the brass and iron, and precious stones, which, though specified partly (대상29:7), are represented in other portions as "without weight" (대상22:3, 14), we shall give in this table only the amount of gold and silver; and taking the talent of gold as worth £5475 (the talent being 125 pounds in weight), the value of the gold will be about 73s. per ounce. The talent of silver is given at £342 3s. 9d., or 4s. 4½d. per ounce. The total amount of the contributions will be:
Though it has been the common practice of Eastern monarchs to hoard vast sums for the accomplishment of any contemplated project, this amount so far exceeds not only every Oriental collection on record, but even the bounds of probability, that it is very generally allowed that either there is a corruption of the text in 대상22:14, or that the reckoning of the historian was by the Babylonian, which was only a half, or the Syrian, which was only a fifth part, of the Hebrew talent. This would bring the Scripture account more into accordance with the statements of Josephus, as well as within the range of credibility.

 

【대상29:20 JFB】20. all the congregation … worshipped the Lord, and the king—Though the external attitude might be the same, the sentiments of which it was expressive were very different in the two cases—of divine worship in the one, of civil homage in the other.

 

【대상29:20 MHCC】This great assembly joined with David in adoring God. Whoever is the mouth of the congregation, those only have the benefit who join him, not by bowing down the head, so much as by lifting up the soul. Solomon sat on the throne of the Lord. Solomon's kingdom typified the kingdom of the Messiah, whose throne is the throne of the Lord.

 

【대상29:21 JFB】21, 22. they sacrificed … And did eat and drink—After the business of the assembly was over, the people, under the exciting influence of the occasion, still remained, and next day engaged in the performance of solemn rites, and afterwards feasted on the remainder of the sacrifices.

made Solomon … king the second time—in reference to the first time, which was done precipitately on Adonijah's conspiracy (왕상1:35).
they … anointed … Zadok—The statement implies that his appointment met the popular approval. His elevation as sole high priest was on the disgrace of Abiathar, one of Adonijah's accomplices.

【대상29:26 MHCC】When we read the second book of Samuel, we could scarcely have expected to behold David appear so illustrious in his closing scene. But his repentance had been as remarkable as his sin; and his conduct during his afflictions, and towards the end of his life, appears to have had a good effect on his subjects. Blessed be God, even the chief of sinners may hope for a glorious departure, when brought to repent and flee for refuge to the Saviour's atoning blood. Let us mark the difference between the spirit and character of the man after God's own heart, living and dying, and those of worthless professors, who resemble him in nothing but their sins, and who wickedly try to excuse their crimes by his sins. Let us watch and pray, lest we be overcome by temptation, and overtaken by sin, to the dishonour of God, and the wounding of our own consciences. When we feel that we have offended, let us follow David's example of repentance and patience, looking for a glorious resurrection, through our Lord Jesus Christ.
