■ 사사기 6장

And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord : and the Lord delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years .

And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel : and because of the Midianites the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains , and caves , and strong holds .

And so it was, when Israel had sown , that the Midianites came up , and the Amalekites , and the children of the east , even they came up against them;

And they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth , till thou come unto Gaza , and left no sustenance for Israel , neither sheep , nor ox , nor ass .
5. 이는 그들이 그 짐승과 장막을 가지고 올라와서 메뚜기떼 같이 들어오니 그 사람과 약대가 무수함이라 그들이 그 땅에 들어와 멸하려 하니
For they came up with their cattle and their tents , and they came as grasshoppers for multitude ; for both they and their camels were without number : and they entered into the land to destroy it.

And Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites ; and the children of Israel cried unto the Lord .

That the Lord sent a prophet unto the children of Israel , which said unto them, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel , I brought you up from Egypt , and brought you forth out of the house of bondage ;

And I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians , and out of the hand of all that oppressed you, and drave them out from before you, and gave you their land ;
10. 내가 또 너희에게 이르기를 나는 너희 하나님 여호와니 너희의 거하는 아모리 사람의 땅의 신들을 두려워 말라 하였으나 너희가 내 목소리를 청종치 아니하였느니라 하셨다 하니라
And I said unto you, I am the Lord your God ; fear not the gods of the Amorites , in whose land ye dwell : but ye have not obeyed my voice .

And there came an angel of the Lord , and sat under an oak which was in Ophrah , that pertained unto Joash the Abi–ezrite : and his son Gideon threshed wheat by the winepress , to hide it from the Midianites .

And the angel of the Lord appeared unto him, and said unto him, The Lord is with thee, thou mighty man of valour .

And Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord , if the Lord be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying , Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt ? but now the Lord hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites .

And the Lord looked upon him, and said , Go in this thy might , and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites : have not I sent thee?

And he said unto him, Oh my Lord , wherewith shall I save Israel ? behold, my family is poor in Manasseh , and I am the least in my father’s house .
16. 여호와께서 그에게 이르시되 내가 반드시 너와 함께 하리니 네가 미디안 사람 치기를 한 사람을 치듯 하리라
And the Lord said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man .
17. 기드온이 그에게 대답하되 내가 주께 은혜를 얻었사오면 나와 말씀하신 이가 주 되시는 표징을 내게 보이소서
And he said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight , then shew me a sign that thou talkest with me.
18. 내가 예물을 가지고 다시 주께로 와서 그것을 주 앞에 드리기까지 이곳을 떠나지 마시기를 원하나이다 그가 가로되 내가 너 돌아오기를 기다리리라
Depart not hence, I pray thee, until I come unto thee, and bring forth my present , and set it before thee. And he said , I will tarry until thou come again .
19. 기드온이 가서 염소 새끼 하나를 준비하고 가루 한 에바로 무교전병을 만들고 고기를 소쿠리에 담고 국을 양푼에 담아서 상수리나무 아래 그에게로 가져다가 드리매
And Gideon went in , and made ready a kid , and unleavened cakes of an ephah of flour : the flesh he put in a basket , and he put the broth in a pot , and brought it out unto him under the oak , and presented it.
20. 하나님의 사자가 그에게 이르되 고기와 무교전병을 가져 이 반석 위에 두고 그 위에 국을 쏟으라 기드온이 그대로 하니
And the angel of God said unto him, Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes , and lay them upon this rock , and pour out the broth . And he did so.
21. 여호와의 사자가 손에 잡은 지팡이 끝을 내밀어 고기와 무교전병에 대매 불이 반석에서 나와 고기와 무교전병을 살랐고 여호와의 사자는 떠나서 보이지 아니한지라
Then the angel of the Lord put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand , and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes ; and there rose up fire out of the rock , and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes . Then the angel of the Lord departed out of his sight .
22. 기드온이 그가 여호와의 사자인줄 알고 가로되 슬프도소이다 주 여호와여 내가 여호와의 사자를 대면하여 보았나이다
And when Gideon perceived that he was an angel of the Lord , Gideon said , Alas , O Lord God ! for because I have seen an angel of the Lord face to face .
23. 여호와께서 그에게 이르시되 너는 안심하라 두려워 말라 죽지 아니하리라 하시니라
And the Lord said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die .
24. 기드온이 여호와를 위하여 거기서 단을 쌓고 이름을 여호와 살롬이라 하였더라 그것이 오늘까지 아비에셀 사람에게 속한 오브라에 있더라
Then Gideon built an altar there unto the Lord , and called it Jehovah–shalom : unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abi–ezrites .
25. 이날 밤에 여호와께서 기드온에게 이르시되 네 아비의 수소 곧 칠 년된 둘째 수소를 취하고 네 아비에게 있는 바알의 단을 헐며 단 곁의 아세라 상을 찍고
And it came to pass the same night , that the Lord said unto him, Take thy father’s young bullock , even the second bullock of seven years old , and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the grove that is by it:
26. 또 이 견고한 성 위에 네 하나님 여호와를 위하여 규례대로 한 단을 쌓고 그 둘째 수소를 취하여 네가 찍은 아세라나무로 번제를 드릴지니라
And build an altar unto the Lord thy God upon the top of this rock , in the ordered place , and take the second bullock , and offer a burnt sacrifice with the wood of the grove which thou shalt cut down .
27. 이에 기드온이 종 열을 데리고 여호와의 말씀하신 대로 행하되 아비의 가족과 그 성읍 사람들을 두려워하므로 이 일을 감히 백주에 행하지 못하고 밤에 행하니라
Then Gideon took ten men of his servants , and did as the Lord had said unto him: and so it was, because he feared his father’s household , and the men of the city , that he could not do it by day , that he did it by night .
28. 성읍 사람들이 아침에 일찍이 일어나 본즉 바알의 단이 훼파되었으며 단 곁의 아세라가 찍혔고 새로 쌓은 단 위에 그 둘째 수소를 드렸는지라
And when the men of the city arose early in the morning , behold, the altar of Baal was cast down , and the grove was cut down that was by it, and the second bullock was offered upon the altar that was built .
29. 서로 물어 가로되 이것이 누구의 소위인고 하고 그들이 캐어 물은 후에 가로되 요아스의 아들 기드온이 이를 행하였도다 하고
And they said one to another , Who hath done this thing ? And when they enquired and asked , they said , Gideon the son of Joash hath done this thing .
30. 성읍 사람들이 요아스에게 이르되 네 아들을 끌어내라 그는 당연히 죽을지니 이는 바알의 단을 훼파하고 단 곁의 아세라를 찍었음이니라
Then the men of the city said unto Joash , Bring out thy son , that he may die : because he hath cast down the altar of Baal , and because he hath cut down the grove that was by it.
31. 요아스가 자기를 둘러선 모든자에게 이르되 너희가 바알을 위하여 쟁론하느냐 너희가 바알을 구원하겠느냐 그를 위하여 쟁론하는 자는 이 아침에 죽음을 당하리라 바알이 과연 신일진대 그 단을 훼파하였은즉 스스로 쟁론할 것이니라 하니라
And Joash said unto all that stood against him, Will ye plead for Baal ? will ye save him? he that will plead for him, let him be put to death whilst it is yet morning : if he be a god , let him plead for himself, because one hath cast down his altar .
32. 그 날에 기드온을 여룹바알이라 하였으니 이는 그가 바알의 단을 훼파하였은즉 바알이 더불어 쟁론할 것이라 함이었더라
Therefore on that day he called him Jerubbaal , saying , Let Baal plead against him, because he hath thrown down his altar .
33. 때에 미디안 사람과 아말렉 사람과 동방 사람들이 다 모여 요단을 건너와서 이스르엘 골짜기에 진을 친지라
Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east were gathered together , and went over , and pitched in the valley of Jezreel .

But the Spirit of the Lord came upon Gideon , and he blew a trumpet ; and Abi–ezer was gathered after him.
35. 기드온이 또 사자를 온 므낫세에 두루 보내매 그들도 모여서 그를 좇고 또 사자를 아셀과 스불론과 납달리에 보내매 그 무리도 올라와서 그를 영접하더라
And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh ; who also was gathered after him: and he sent messengers unto Asher , and unto Zebulun , and unto Naphtali ; and they came up to meet them.
36. 기드온이 하나님께 여짜오되 주께서 이미 말씀하심 같이 내 손으로 이스라엘을 구원하려 하시거든
And Gideon said unto God , If thou wilt save Israel by mine hand , as thou hast said ,
37. 보소서 내가 양털 한 뭉치를 타작마당에 두리니 이슬이 양털에만 있고 사면 땅은 마르면 주께서 이미 말씀하심 같이 내 손으로 이스라엘을 구원하실 줄 내가 알겠나이다 하였더니
Behold, I will put a fleece of wool in the floor ; and if the dew be on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the earth beside, then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by mine hand , as thou hast said .
38. 그대로 된지라 이튿날 기드온이 일찍이 일어나서 양털을 취하여 이슬을 짜니 물이 그릇에 가득하더라
And it was so: for he rose up early on the morrow , and thrust the fleece together , and wringed the dew out of the fleece , a bowl full of water .
39. 기드온이 또 하나님께 여짜오되 주여 내게 진노하지 마옵소서 내가 이번만 말하리이다 구하옵나니 나로 다시 한번 양털로 시험하게 하소서 양털만 마르고 사면 땅에는 다 이슬이 있게 하옵소서 하였더니
And Gideon said unto God , Let not thine anger be hot against me, and I will speak but this once : let me prove , I pray thee, but this once with the fleece ; let it now be dry only upon the fleece , and upon all the ground let there be dew .
40. 이 밤에 하나님이 그대로 행하시니 곧 양털만 마르고 사면 땅에는 다 이슬이 있었더라
And God did so that night : for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground .

【삿6:1 JFB】유6:1-6. The Israelites, for Their Sins, Oppressed by Midian.
1. and the Lord delivered them into the hand of Midian—Untaught by their former experiences, the Israelites again apostatized, and new sins were followed by fresh judgments. Midian had sustained a severe blow in the time of Moses (민31:1-18); and the memory of that disaster, no doubt, inflamed their resentment against the Israelites. They were wandering herdsmen, called "children of the East," from their occupying the territory east of the Red Sea, contiguous to Moab. The destructive ravages they are described as at this time committing in the land of Israel are similar to those of the Bedouin Arabs, who harass the peaceful cultivators of the soil. Unless composition is made with them, they return annually at a certain season, when they carry off the grain, seize the cattle and other property; and even life itself is in jeopardy from the attacks of those prowling marauders. The vast horde of Midianites that overran Canaan made them the greatest scourge which had ever afflicted the Israelites.

The old story of sin and suffering is repeated after the death of Deborah.
The Midianites occupied territory on the south and east, contiguous to Moab, and were wandering herdsmen like the modern Bedouins, who, in connection with the Amalekites, harassed Israel at every opportunity with the results indicated in c. 6:1-6.
God sends a prophet to His people in this case before He sends a Saviour (vv. 7-10), for they must be brought to repentance before deliverance can be vouchsafed.
1. Gideon Called, c 6:11-24.
"An angel of the Lord" (v. 11), should read "The angel," for the context shows this to be another manifestation of the Second Person of the Trinity. Study the context for evidences of this. Observe Gideon's consciousness of it, the angel's assumption of it (vv. 14 and 16), and its final demonstration (vv. 21-23). Note Gideon's modesty and diffidence (v. 15), suggesting Moses at the burning bush. His request for a sign (v. 17) is neither wrong nor unreasonable as the event shows. Although the acceptance of his sacrifice meant the acceptance of himself (v. 21), yet so deep-seated is fear in the heart because of sin (v. 22), that a special assurance from Jehovah is needed to restore his peace after he has become conscious of the Divine Presence (v. 23).
2. The Ensign Raised, c. 6:25-32.
Immediately upon his call Gideon enters upon service (v. 25). The "second bullock" of his father is named probably because the first had been stolen by the enemy. The father was an idolator like all the rest, it would appear, and the altar on his ground may have been one for public use. Secrecy is necessary in destroying this altar (v. 27), as the commotion following evidences (vv. 28-30). Joash's defense of his son suggests Elijah on Mt. Carmel (1 Kings 18), and, in another sense, Gamaliel before the Sanhedrin (Acts 5), or the town clerk at Ephesus (Acts 19).
3. The Battle Arrayed, c. 6:32-40.
"The Spirit of the Lord came upon Gideon" (v. 34). The margin of the Revised Version says, "The Spirit of the Lord clothed Himself with Gideon," an Old Testament way of speaking of the filling of the Spirit of which the New Testament so often speaks in connection with Christian experience (see 엡5:18). No wonder that Gideon could "do exploits" (단11:32), under such circumstances. This explains the gathering of the people to Gideon's standard (v. 35).
And yet Gideon's weak faith calls for another sign -- two of them indeed (vv. 36-39) -- for he has reached a second crisis in his career, and God condescends to manifest it (vv. 38, 40).
4. The Victory Won, c. 7:1-23.
This must be God's victory and not man's, therefore, although 32,000 men (v. 3) were few enough against an army "as grasshoppers for multitude" (c. 6:5), they must be reduced still further. For the first test (v. 3), compare 신20:8, the second (vv. 4-7) was unique. Wandering tribes in Asia, when in haste, do not stoop deliberately on their knees to drink water, but only bend forward to bring their hand in contact with the stream, and throw up the water rapidly and with great expertness into their mouths. The Israelites who chose to do so on this occasion were the earnest and energetic ones fitted for the expedition God now had in mind.
What a trial of faith to attack an overwhelming force with only 300 men! No wonder Gideon needed another sign to reassure him for the engagement, which God now vouchsafed to him.
Observe the expression in v. 9: "Arise, get thee down unto the host." The latter were in the valley and attention to this is of importance to understand something of what follows. The dream and its interpretation in their effect on Gideon require no explanation. They were God's way of animating the little band of Israelites and they had such result.
But if the smallness of the army is astonishing, what shall we say of the foolishness of their armament (v. 16-18)? Compare 고전1:18-31. The pitchers concealed the lamps, which were what we call torches, and being earthenware were easily broken. The 300 men were divided into three bands that they might seem to be surrounding the camp. Suddenly, in the darkness and stillness of the night, a loud echo of trumpets is heard, followed by a mighty shout from every side; a blaze encircles the camp, and the sleepers started from their rest and supernaturally alarmed as they doubtless were, run tumultuously hither and thither, not knowing friend from foe, and soon precipitately flee (vv. 19-22). "The men of Israel" who pursued after them, were either the 10,000 or the 32,000 who had lingered near the scene and were now ready to join in the fight when everything appeared so hopeful.
5. The Campaign Extended, c. 8:1-21.
Verses 1-4 require little comment, but should not be passed over without observing Gideon's modesty and greatness in soothing the wounded pride of Ephraim (compare 잠15:1 and 빌2:4).
"The men of Succoth" (v. 5) and those of Penuel (v. 8), were of the tribe of Gad, but one would hardly think they were of Israel at all by the way they acted in this case. They were afraid of the Midianitish kings, and doubted Gideon's ability to overcome them. Verse 14 shows that it was the chief men of these places that had treated him thus, and whom he now returns to punish. "He taught the men" (v. 16) means according to the margin that he "threshed" them. The method was placing thorns and briers on the naked body and pressing them down by heavy implements of some kind. Cruel torture, but we can say nothing more about it than in the cases of cruelty mentioned earlier.
The Midianitish kings had slain Gideon's brothers (vv. 18, 19), and it was his duty as nearest of kin to take requital, although he offered the honor to his son (v. 20). Jether failing in the premises, Gideon acted the part (v. 21).
6. End of Gideon's Life, c. 8:22-32.
The tribes would have made Gideon king (v. 22) had not the latter showed his loyalty to God, and to them also by declining the offer (v. 23). He would be judge, but Jehovah must be King. And yet he made a mistake, though not intentionally perhaps, in what follows (v. 24-27). In other words, there seems no reason to believe that he had idolatry in view in what he did, although after his decease it worked that way (v. 33). What he had in mind apparently was an ephod for his use as a civil magistrate as in David's case later (대상15:27).

11. there came an angel of the Lord—He appeared in the character and equipments of a traveller (유6:21), who sat down in the shade to enjoy a little refreshment and repose. Entering into conversation on the engrossing topic of the times, the grievous oppression of the Midianites, he began urging Gideon to exert his well-known prowess on behalf of his country. Gideon, in replying, addresses him at first in a style equivalent (in Hebrew) to "sir," but afterwards gives to him the name usually applied to God.

Ophrah—a city in the tribe of Manasseh, about sixteen miles north of Jericho, in the district belonging to the family of Abiezer (수17:2).
his son Gideon threshed wheat by the wine-press—This incident tells emphatically the tale of public distress. The small quantity of grain he was threshing, indicated by his using a flail instead of the customary treading of cattle—the unusual place, near a wine-press, under a tree, and on the bare ground, not a wooden floor, for the prevention of noise—all these circumstances reveal the extreme dread in which the people were living.
【삿6:11 MHCC】Gideon was a man of a brave, active spirit, yet in obscurity through the times: he is here stirred up to undertake something great. It was very sure that the Lord was with him, when his Angel was with him. Gideon was weak in faith, which made it hard to reconcile the assurances of the presence of God with the distress to which Israel was brought. The Angel answered his objections. He told him to appear and act as Israel's deliverer, there needed no more. Bishop Hall says, While God calls Gideon valiant, he makes him so. God delights to advance the humble. Gideon desires to have his faith confirmed. Now, under the influences of the Spirit, we are not to expect signs before our eyes such as Gideon here desired, but must earnestly pray to God, that if we have found grace in his sight, he would show us a sign in our heart, by the powerful working of his Spirit there, The Angel turned the meat into an offering made by fire; showing that he was not a man who needed meat, but the Son of God, who was to be served and honoured by sacrifice, and who in the fulness of time was to make himself a sacrifice. Hereby a sign was given to Gideon, that he had found grace in God's sight. Ever since man has by sin exposed himself to God's wrath and curse, a message from heaven has been a terror to him, as he scarcely dares to expect good tidings thence. In this world, it is very awful to have any converse with that world of spirits to which we are so much strangers. Gideon's courage failed him. But God spoke peace to him.

The miraculous fire that consumed it and the vanishing of the stranger, not by walking, but as a spirit in the fire, filled Gideon with awe. A consciousness of demerit fills the heart of every fallen man at the thought of God, with fear of His wrath; and this feeling was increased by a belief prevalent in ancient times, that whoever saw an angel would forthwith die. The acceptance of Gideon's sacrifice betokened the acceptance of his person; but it required an express assurance of the divine blessing, given in some unknown manner, to restore his comfort and peace of mind.
【삿6:24 JFB】24-32. it came to pass the same night, that the Lord said unto him—The transaction in which Gideon is here described as engaged was not entered on till the night after the vision.
【삿6:25 JFB】25. Take thy father's … second bullock—The Midianites had probably reduced the family herd; or, as Gideon's father was addicted to idolatry, the best may have been fattened for the service of Baal; so that the second was the only remaining one fit for sacrifice to God.
throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath—standing upon his ground, though kept for the common use of the townsmen.
cut down the grove that is by it—dedicated to Ashtaroth. With the aid of ten confidential servants he demolished the one altar and raised on the appointed spot the altar of the Lord; but, for fear of opposition, the work had to be done under cover of night. A violent commotion was excited next day, and vengeance vowed against Gideon as the perpetrator. "Joash, his father, quieted the mob in a manner similar to that of the town clerk of Ephesus. It was not for them to take the matter into their own hands. The one, however, made an appeal to the magistrate; the other to the idolatrous god himself" [Chalmers].
【삿6:25 MHCC】See the power of God's grace, that he could raise up a reformer; and the kindness of his grace, that he would raise up a deliverer, out of the family of a leader in idolatry. Gideon must not think it enough not to worship at that altar; he must throw it down, and offer sacrifice on another. It was needful he should make peace with God, before he made war on Midian. Till sin be pardoned through the great Sacrifice, no good is to be expected. God, who has all hearts in his hands, influenced Joash to appear for his son against the advocates for Baal, though he had joined formerly in the worship of Baal. Let us do our duty, and trust God with our safety. Here is a challenge to Baal, to do either good or evil; the result convinced his worshippers of their folly, in praying to one to help them that could not avenge himself.
【삿6:33 JFB】유6:33-39. The Signs.
33. all the Midianites … pitched in Jezreel—The confederated troops of Midian, Amalek, and their neighbors, crossing the Jordan to make a fresh inroad on Canaan, encamped in the plains of Esdraelon (anciently Jezreel). The southern part of the Ghor lies in a very low level, so that there is a steep and difficult descent into Canaan by the southern wadies. Keeping this in view, we see the reason why the Midianite army, from the east of Jordan, entered Canaan by the northern wadies of the Ghor, opposite Jezreel.
【삿6:33 MHCC】These signs are truly miraculous, and very significant. Gideon and his men were going to fight the Midianites; could God distinguish between a small fleece of Israel, and the vast floor of Midian? Gideon is made to know that God could do so. Is Gideon desirous that the dew of Divine grace might come down upon himself in particular? He sees the fleece wet with dew to assure him of it. Does he desire that God will be as the dew to all Israel? Behold, all the ground is wet. What cause we sinners of the Gentiles have, to bless the Lord that the dew of heavenly blessings, once confined to Israel, is now sent to all the inhabitants of the earth! Yet still the means of grace are in different measures, according to the purposes of God. In the same congregation, one man's soul is like Gideon's moistened fleece, another like the dry ground.
【삿6:34 JFB】34. the Spirit of the Lord came upon Gideon—Called in this sudden emergency into the public service of his country, he was supernaturally endowed with wisdom and energy commensurate with the magnitude of the danger and the difficulties of his position. His summons to war was enthusiastically obeyed by all the neighboring tribes. On the eve of a perilous enterprise, he sought to fortify his mind with a fresh assurance of a divine call to the responsible office. The miracle of the fleece was a very remarkable one—especially, considering the copious dews that fall in his country. The divine patience and condescension were wonderfully manifested in reversing the form of the miracle. Gideon himself seems to have been conscious of incurring the displeasure of God by his hesitancy and doubts; but He bears with the infirmities of His people.
