■ 이사야 57장
1. 의인이 죽을지라도 마음에 두는 자가 없고 자비한 자들이 취하여감을 입을지라도 그 의인은 화액 전에 취하여 감을 입은 것인 줄로 깨닫는 자가 없도다
The righteous perisheth , and no man layeth it to heart : and merciful men are taken away , none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come.
2. 그는 평안에 들어갔나니 무릇 정로로 행하는 자는 자기들의 침상에서 편히 쉬느니라
He shall enter into peace : they shall rest in their beds , each one walking in his uprightness .
3. 무녀의 자식, 간음자와 음녀의 씨 너희는 가까이 오라
But draw near hither, ye sons of the sorceress , the seed of the adulterer and the whore .
4. 너희가 누구를 희롱하느냐 누구를 향하여 입을 크게 벌리며 혀를 내미느냐 너희는 패역의 자식, 궤휼의 종류가 아니냐
Against whom do ye sport yourselves? against whom make ye a wide mouth , and draw out the tongue ? are ye not children of transgression , a seed of falsehood ,
5. 너희가 상수리나무 사이, 모든 푸른 나무 아래서 음욕을 피우며 골짜기 가운데 바위 틈에서 자녀를 죽이는도다
Enflaming yourselves with idols under every green tree , slaying the children in the valleys under the clifts of the rocks ?
6. 골짜기 가운데 매끄러운 돌 중에 너희 소득이 있으니 그것이 곧 너희가 제비 뽑아 얻은 것이라 너희가 전제와 예물을 그것들에게 드리니 내가 어찌 이를 용인하겠느냐
Among the smooth stones of the stream is thy portion ; they, they are thy lot : even to them hast thou poured a drink offering , thou hast offered a meat offering . Should I receive comfort in these?
7. 네가 높고 높은 산 위에 침상을 베풀었고 네가 또 그리로 올라가서 제사를 드렸으며
Upon a lofty and high mountain hast thou set thy bed : even thither wentest thou up to offer sacrifice .
8. 네가 또 네 기념표를 문과 문설주 뒤에 두었으며 네가 나를 배반하고 다른 자를 위하여 몸을 드러내고 올라가며 네 침상을 넓히고 그들과 언약하며 또 그들의 침상을 사랑하여 그 처소를 예비하였으며
Behind the doors also and the posts hast thou set up thy remembrance : for thou hast discovered thyself to another than me, and art gone up ; thou hast enlarged thy bed , and made thee a covenant with them; thou lovedst their bed where thou sawest it.
9. 네가 기름을 가지고 몰렉에게 나아가되 향품을 더욱 더하였으며 네가 또 사신을 원방에 보내고 음부까지 스스로 낮추었으며
And thou wentest to the king with ointment , and didst increase thy perfumes , and didst send thy messengers far off , and didst debase thyself even unto hell .
10. 네가 길이 멀어서 피곤할지라도 헛되다 아니함은 네 힘이 소성되었으므로 쇠약하여 가지 아니함이니라
Thou art wearied in the greatness of thy way ; yet saidst thou not, There is no hope : thou hast found the life of thine hand ; therefore thou wast not grieved .
11. 네가 누구를 두려워하며 누구로하여 놀랐기에 거짓을 말하며 나를 생각지 아니하며 이를 마음에 두지 아니하였느냐 네가 나를 경외치 아니함은 내가 오래동안 잠잠함을 인함이 아니냐
And of whom hast thou been afraid or feared , that thou hast lied , and hast not remembered me, nor laid it to thy heart ? have not I held my peace even of old , and thou fearest me not?
12. 너의 의를 내가 보이리라 너의 소위가 네게 무익하니라
I will declare thy righteousness , and thy works ; for they shall not profit thee.
13. 네가 부르짖을 때에 네가 모은 우상으로 너를 구원하게 하라 그것은 다 바람에 떠 가겠고 기운에 불려갈 것이로되 나를 의뢰하는 자는 땅을 차지하겠고 나의 거룩한 산을 기업으로 얻으리라
When thou criest , let thy companies deliver thee; but the wind shall carry them all away ; vanity shall take them: but he that putteth his trust in me shall possess the land , and shall inherit my holy mountain ;
14. 장차 말하기를 돋우고 돋우어 길을 수축하여 내 백성의 길에서 거치는 것을 제하여 버리라 하리라
And shall say , Cast ye up , cast ye up , prepare the way , take up the stumblingblock out of the way of my people .
15. 지존무상하며 영원히 거하며 거룩하다 이름하는 자가 이같이 말씀하시되 내가 높고 거룩한 곳에 거하며 또한 통회하고 마음이 겸손한 자와 함께 거하나니 이는 겸손한 자의 영을 소성케 하며 통회하는 자의 마음을 소성케 하려 함이라
For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity , whose name is Holy ; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit , to revive the spirit of the humble , and to revive the heart of the contrite ones .
16. 내가 영원히는 다투지 아니하며 내가 장구히는 노하지 아니할 것은 나의 지은 그 영과 혼이 내 앞에서 곤비할까 함이니라
For I will not contend for ever , neither will I be always wroth : for the spirit should fail before me, and the souls which I have made .
17. 그의 탐심의 죄악을 인하여 내가 노하여 그를 쳤으며 또 내 얼굴을 가리우고 노하였으나 그가 오히려 패역하여 자기 마음의 길로 행하도다
For the iniquity of his covetousness was I wroth , and smote him: I hid me, and was wroth , and he went on frowardly in the way of his heart .
18. 내가 그 길을 보았은즉 그를 고쳐 줄 것이라 그를 인도하며 그와 그의 슬퍼하는 자에게 위로를 다시 얻게 하리라
I have seen his ways , and will heal him: I will lead him also, and restore comforts unto him and to his mourners .
19. 입술의 열매를 짓는 나 여호와가 말하노라 먼 데 있는 자에게든지 가까운 데 있는 자에게든지 평강이 있을지어다 평강이 있을지어다 내가 그를 고치리라 하셨느니라
I create the fruit of the lips ; Peace , peace to him that is far off , and to him that is near , saith the Lord ; and I will heal him.
20. 오직 악인은 능히 안정치 못하고 그 물이 진흙과 더러운 것을 늘 솟쳐내는 요동하는 바다와 같으니라
But the wicked are like the troubled sea , when it cannot rest , whose waters cast up mire and dirt .
21. 내 하나님의 말씀에 악인에게는 평강이 없다 하셨느니라
There is no peace , saith my God , to the wicked .

【사57:1 JFB】사57:1-21. The Peaceful Death of the Righteous Few: the Ungodliness of the Many: a Believing Remnant Shall Survive the General Judgments of the Nation, and Be Restored byHim Who Creates Peace.
In the midst of the excesses of the unfaithful watchmen (사56:10, 11, 12), most of the few that are godly perish: partly by vexation at the prevailing ungodliness; partly by violent death in persecution: prophetical of the persecuting times of Manasseh, before God's judgments in causing the captivity in Babylon; and again those in the last age of the Church, before the final judgments on the apostasy (왕하21:16; 마23:29-35, 37; 계11:17). The Hebrew for "perisheth," and "is taken away," expresses a violent death (미7:2).
1. no man layeth it to heart—as a public calamity.
merciful men—rather, godly men; the subjects of mercy.
none considering—namely, what was the design of Providence in removing the godly.
from the evil—Hebrew, from the face of the evil, that is, both from the moral evil on every side (사56:10-12), and from the evils about to come in punishment of the national sins, foreign invasions, &c. (사56:9; 57:13). So Ahijah's death is represented as a blessing conferred on him by God for his piety (왕상14:10-13; see also 왕하22:20).
【사57:1 CWC】[THE MESSIAH REVEALED]
The thirty-two chapters deal particularly with the Person and work of the Messiah. Isaiah has sometimes been called "the evangelical prophet" because of the large space he gives to that subject -- a circumstance the more notable because of the silence concerning it since Moses. The explanation of this silence is hinted at in the lesson on the introduction to the prophets.
In chapter 49, the Messiah speaks of Himself and the failure of His mission in His rejection by His nation (vv. 1-4). This rejection works blessing to the Gentiles (vv. 5, 6) compare Romans 11). Ultimately Israel shall be brought to Him and indeed the whole earth (see the remainder of the chapter). Zion, i. e., Israel, may doubt this (v. 14), but is made assured of it in what follows.
Chapter 50 is connected with the preceding verses 1-3 referring to Zion's restoration. But at verse 4 the Messiah bears witness to Himself again. His obedience, suffering and triumph down to the end of the chapter.
These verses furnish rich material for a Bible reading or expository discourse on "The Training of Jesus." (1). His Teacher: "The Lord God hath given me the tongue of the learned"; (2), the object of His teaching: "That I should know how to speak a word in season," &c.; (3), the method of its impartations: "He wakeneth morning by morning"; (4), the spirit of the pupil: "I was not rebellious," &c.; (5), the encouragement He receives: "The Lord God will help me"; (6), the counsel He offers to others: "Who is among you that feareth the Lord"? (7), the warning to the disobedient: "Behold all ye that kindle a fire."
In like manner 51 is linked to chapter 50, by the words of comfort to Zion which shall be brought to her through the Messiah's work on her behalf. Verses 9-11 are a prayer of faith of the faithful remnant which is answered in the remainder of that chapter and the following, down to and including verse 12.
Chapters 52:13-53:12 are a unit in their Messianic character. Christ's personal suffering and glorious triumph are depicted in the closing verses of chapter 52. His rejection by Israel in 53:1-6; His submission, deliverance and reward (vv. 7-12).
Chapter 54 exhibits the result of this in Israel's conversion, restoration and earthly glory in the millennium. Observe the divine oath that this shall be brought to pass (v. 9).
Chapter 55 is the offer of this salvation to Israel, and requires no comment.
Chapter 56 shows that when this offer is at last accepted and the salvation experienced by Israel, it will mean similar blessing to the whole earth (vv. 1-8).
The rest of this chapter, and nearly the whole of the following one, describe the sad condition of Israel at present, but especially at the end period under the Antichrist (57:9). The section concludes with the customary promises to the faithful (57:15-19).

사57:1,2 The righteous are delivered from the sting of death, not from the stroke of it. The careless world disregards this. Few lament it as a public loss, and very few notice it as a public warning. They are taken away in compassion, that they may not see the evil, nor share in it, nor be tempted by it. The righteous man, when he dies, enters into peace and rest.
사57:3-12 The Lord here calls apostates and hypocrites to appear before him. When reproved for their sins, and threatened with judgments, they ridiculed the word of God. The Jews were guilty of idolatry before the captivity; but not after that affliction. Their zeal in the worship of false gods, may shame our indifference in the worship of the true God. The service of sin is disgraceful slavery; those who thus debase themselves to hell, will justly have their portion there. Men incline to a religion that inflames their unholy passions. They are led to do any evil, however great or vile, if they think it will atone for crimes, or purchase indulgence for some favourite lust. This explains idolatry, whether pagan, Jewish, or antichristian. But those who set up anything instead of God, for their hope and confidence, never will come to a right end. Those who forsake the only right way, wander in a thousand by-paths. The pleasures of sin soon tire, but never satisfy. Those who care not for the word of God and his providences, show they have no fear of God. Sin profits not; it ruins and destroys.
사57:13-21 The idols and their worshippers shall come to nothing; but those who trust in God's grace, shall be brought to the joys of heaven. With the Lord there is neither beginning of days, nor end of life, nor change of time. His name is holy, and all must know him as a holy God. He will have tender regard to those who bring their mind to their condition, and dread his wrath. He will make his abode with those whose hearts he has thus humbled, in order to revive and comfort them. When troubles last long, even good men are tempted to entertain hard thoughts of God. Therefore He will not contend for ever, for he will not forsake the work of his own hands, nor defeat the purchase of his Son's blood. Covetousness is a sin that particularly lays men under the Divine displeasure. See the sinfulness of sin. See also that troubles cannot reform men unless God's grace work in them. Peace shall be published, perfect peace. It is the fruit of preaching lips, and praying lips. Christ came and preached peace to Gentiles, as well as to the Jews; to after-ages, who were afar off in time, as well as to those of that age. But the wicked would not be healed by God's grace, therefore would not be healed by his comforts. Their ungoverned lusts and passions made them like the troubled sea. Also the terrors of conscience disturbed their enjoyments. God hath said it, and all the world cannot unsay it, That there is no peace to those who allow themselves in any sin. If we are recovered from such an awful state, it is only by the grace of God. And the influences of the Holy Spirit, and that new heart, from whence comes grateful praise, the fruit of our lips, are his gift. Salvation, with all its fruits, hopes, and comforts, is his work, and to him belongs all the glory. There is no peace for the wicked man; but let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; and let him return to the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him, and to our God, and he will abundantly pardon.
【사57:2 JFB】2. Or, "he entereth into peace"; in contrast to the persecutions which he suffered in this world (욥3:13, 17). The Margin not so well translates, "he shall go in peace" (시37:37; Lu 2:29).
rest—the calm rest of their bodies in their graves (called "beds," 대하16:14; compare 사14:18; because they "sleep" in them, with the certainty of awakening at the resurrection, 살전4:14) is the emblem of the eternal "rest" (히4:9; 계14:13).
each one walking in … uprightness—This clause defines the character of those who at death "rest in their beds," namely, all who walk uprightly.
【사57:3 JFB】3. But … ye—In contrast to "the righteous" and their end, he announces to the unbelieving Jews their doom.
sons of the sorceress—that is, ye that are addicted to sorcery: this was connected with the worship of false gods (왕하21:6). No insult is greater to an Oriental than any slur cast on his mother (삼상20:30; 욥30:8).
seed of the adulterer—Spiritual adultery is meant: idolatry and apostasy (마16:4).
【사57:4 JFB】4. sport yourselves—make a mock (사66:5). Are ye aware of the glory of Him whom you mock, by mocking His servants ("the righteous," 사57:1)? (대하36:16).
make … wide mouth—(시22:7, 13; 35:21; 애2:16).
children of transgression, &c.—not merely children of transgressors, and a seed of false parents, but of transgression and falsehood itself, utterly unfaithful to God.
【사57:5 JFB】5. Enflaming yourselves—burning with lust towards idols [Gesenius]; or else (compare Margin), in the terebinth groves, which the Hebrew and the parallelism favor (see on 사1:29) [Maurer].
under … tree—(왕하17:10). The tree, as in the Assyrian sculptures, was probably made an idolatrous symbol of the heavenly hosts.
slaying … children—as a sacrifice to Molech, &c. (왕하17:31; 대하28:3; 33:6).
in … valleys—the valley of the son of Hinnom. Fire was put within a hollow brazen statue, and the child was put in his heated arms; kettle drums (Hebrew, toph) were beaten to drown the child's cries; whence the valley was called Tophet (대하33:6; 렘7:3).
under … clifts—the gloom of caverns suiting their dark superstitions.

meat offering—not a bloody sacrifice, but one of meal and flour mingled with oil. "Meat" in Old English meant food, not flesh, as it means now (레14:10).
Should I receive comfort—rather, "Shall I bear these things with patience?" [Horsley].
【사57:7 JFB】7. Upon … high mountain … bed—image from adultery, open and shameless (겔23:7); the "bed" answers to the idolatrous altar, the scene of their spiritual unfaithfulness to their divine husband (겔16:16, 25; 23:41).
【사57:8 JFB】8. "Remembrance," that is, memorials of thy idolatry: the objects which thou holdest in remembrance. They hung up household tutelary gods "behind the doors"; the very place where God has directed them to write His laws "on the posts and gates" (신6:9; 11:20); a curse, too, was pronounced on putting up an image "in a secret place" (신27:15).
discovered thyself—image from an adulteress.
enlarged … bed—so as to receive the more paramours.
made … covenant—with idols: in open violation of thy "covenant" with God (출19:5; 23:32). Or, "hast made assignations with them for thyself" [Horsley].
thy bed … their bed—The Jews' sin was twofold; they resorted to places of idolatry ("their bed"), and they received idols into the temple of God ("thy bed").
where—rather, "ever since that" [Horsley]. The Hebrew for "where" means "room" (Margin), a place; therefore, translate, "thou hast provided a place for it" (for "their bed"), namely, by admitting idolatrous altars in thy land [Barnes]; or "thou choosest a (convenient) place for thyself" in their bed [Maurer] (사56:5).
【사57:9 JFB】9. the king—the idol which they came to worship, perfumed with oil, like harlots (렘4:30; 겔23:16, 40). So "king" means idol (암5:26; 습1:5); (malcham meaning "king") [Rosenmuller]. Rather, the king of Assyria or Egypt, and other foreign princes, on whom Israel relied, instead of on God; the "ointment" will thus refer to the presents (호12:1), and perhaps the compliances with foreigners' idolatries, whereby Israel sought to gain their favor [Lowth] (사30:6; 겔16:33; 23:16; 호7:11).
send … messengers far off—not merely to neighboring nations, but to those "far off," in search of new idols, or else alliances.
even unto hell—the lowest possible degradation.
【사57:10 JFB】10. greatness of … way—the length of thy journey in seeking strange gods, or else foreign aid (렘2:23, 24). Notwithstanding thy deriving no good from these long journeys (so, "send … far off," 사57:9), thou dost not still give up hope (렘2:25; 18:12).
hast found … life of … hand—for "thou still findest life (that is, vigor) enough in thy hand" to make new idols [Maurer], or to seek new alliance ("hand" being then taken for strength in general).
grieved—rather, "therefore thou art not weak" [Maurer]; inasmuch as having "life in thy hand," thou art still strong in hope.
【사57:11 JFB】11. Israel wished not to seem altogether to have denied God. Therefore they "lied" to Him. God asks, Why dost thou do so? "Whom dost thou fear? Certainly not Me; for thou hast not remembered Me." Translate, "seeing that thou hast not remembered Me."
laid it to … heart—rather, "nor hast Me at heart"; hast no regard for Me; and that, because I have been long silent and have not punished thee. Literally, "Have I not held My peace, and that for long? and so thou fearest Me not" (시50:21; 전8:11). It would be better openly to renounce God, than to "flatter Him" with lies of false professions (시78:36) [Ludovicus De Dieu]. However, 사51:12, 13 favors English Version of the whole verse; God's "silent" long-suffering, which was intended to lead them to repentance, caused them "not to fear Him" (롬2:4, 5).
【사57:12 JFB】12. declare—I will expose publicly thy (hypocritical) righteousness. I will show openly how vain thy works, in having recourse to idols, or foreign alliances, shall prove (사57:3).

wind … carry … away—(욥21:18; 마7:27).
vanity—rather, "a breath" [Lowth].
possess … land … inherit—that is, the literal land of Judea and Mount Zion; the believing remnant of Israel shall return and inherit the land. Secondarily, the heavenly inheritance, and the spiritual Zion (사49:8; 시37:9, 11; 69:35, 36; 마5:5; 히12:22). "He that putteth his trust in Me," of whatever extraction, shall succeed to the spiritual patrimony of the apostate Jew [Horsley].
【사57:14 JFB】14. shall say—The nominative is, "He that trusteth in Me" (사57:13). The believing remnant shall have every obstacle to their return cleared out of the way, at the coming restoration of Israel, the antitype to the return from Babylon (사35:8; 40:3, 4; 62:10, 11).
Cast … up—a high road before the returning Jews.
stumbling-block—Jesus had been so to the Jews, but will not be so then any longer (고전1:23); their prejudices shall then be taken out of the way.
【사57:15 JFB】15. The pride and self-righteousness of the Jews were the stumbling block in the way of their acknowledging Christ. The contrition of Israel in the last days shall be attended with God's interposition in their behalf. So their self-humiliation, in 사66:2, 5, 10, &c., precedes their final prosperity (Z전12:6, 10-14); there will, probably, be a previous period of unbelief even after their return (Z전12:8, 9).
【사57:16 JFB】16. For—referring to the promise in 사57:14, 15, of restoring Israel when "contrite" (창6:3; 8:21; 시78:38, 39; 85:5; 103:9, 13, 14; 미7:18). God "will not contend for ever" with His people, for their human spirit would thereby be utterly crushed, whereas God's object is to chasten, not to destroy them (애3:33, 34; 미7:8, 9). With the ungodly He is "angry every day" (시7:11; 계14:11).
spirit … before me—that is, the human spirit which went forth from Me (민16:22), answering to "which I have made" in the parallel clause.
【사57:17 JFB】17. covetousness—akin to idolatry; and, like it, having drawn off Israel's heart from God (사2:7; 56:11; 58:3; 렘6:13; 골3:5).
hid me—(사8:17; 45:15).
went on frowardly—the result of God's hiding His face (시81:12; 롬1:24, 26).
【사57:18 JFB】18. Rather, "I have seen his ways (in sin), yet will I heal him," that is, restore Israel spiritually and temporally (렘33:6; 3:22; 호14:4, 5) [Horsley].
I will … restore comforts unto him and to his mourners—However, the phrase, "his mourners," favors English Version; "his ways" will thus be his ways of repentance; and God's pardon on "seeing" them answers to the like promise (사61:2, 3; 렘31:18, 20).
【사57:19 JFB】19. fruit of … lips—that is, thanksgivings which flow from the lips. I make men to return thanks to Me (호14:2; 히13:15).
Peace, peace—"perfect peace" (see 사26:3, Margin;요14:27). Primarily, the cessation of the troubles now afflicting the Jews, as formerly, under the Babylonian exile. More generally, the peace which the Gospel proclaims both to Israel "that is near," and to the Gentiles who are "far off" (행2:39; 엡2:17).
【사57:20 JFB】20. when it cannot rest—rather, "for it can have no rest" (욥15:20, &c.; 잠4:16, 17). English Version represents the sea as occasionally agitated; but the Hebrew expresses that it can never be at rest.
