【시89:1 JFB】시89:1-52. Of Ethan—(See on 시88:1, title). This Psalm was composed during some season of great national distress, perhaps Absalom's rebellion. It contrasts the promised prosperity and perpetuity of David's throne (with reference to the great promise of 삼하7:12-17), with a time when God appeared to have forgotten His covenant. The picture thus drawn may typify the promises and the adversities of Christ's kingdom, and the terms of confiding appeal to God provided appropriate prayers for the divine aid and promised blessing.
1. mercies—those promised (사55:3; 행13:34), and—
faithfulness—that is, in fulfilling them.
【시89:1 CWC】The first Psalm in this lesson suggests Psalm 74 on which we did not dwell, but both of which depict the desolations of Judah by the Babylonians (cf. 렘52:12-24), On this supposition their date would be that of the captivity, and their author a later Asaph than the Asaph mentioned in David's time.
Psalm 80.
Has captivity features also, and some would say it relates to the ten tribes, as the preceding Psalm does to Judah, The next several Psalms are much alike in this respect and may easily be interpreted from that point of view.
Psalm 86.
Attributed to David, constitutes a break in the series, and is a prayer which we pause to analyze. Observe the touching picture in verse 1, a child with his arms round his father's neck. Observe the five requests for: preservation, joy, instruction, strength and encouragement, in verses 2, 4, 11, 16 and 17 respectively. Observe the grounds from the human side on which an answer is expected, his need, importunity (margin), trust, relationship to God (margin), verses 1, 3, 4 and 2. From the divine side he expected it because of God's goodness, greatness and grace, verses, 5, 10, 13.
Of the authors of Psalms 88 and 89 we know nothing save that their names are among David's singers (대상6:18,33; 15:17). There is little to show the occasion when they were written, but the last-named has been assigned to Absalom's rebellion. From that point of view it may be a contrast between the promised prosperity of David's throne (2 Sam. 7), and what now threatens its downfall; but in any event it is full of helpfulness in spiritual application.
Psalms 90 and 91 (especially the latter).
Rank with 37, 51 and 103 in popular favor, being quoted almost as frequently. The first is a contrast between man's frailty and God's eternity, and the second, an outburst, of confidence in the presence of physical peril. Many a foreign missionary has found this last "a very present help in time of trouble"! The two Psalms are also capable of a dispensational application, the first referring to Israel's day of sorrow and repentance, and the second to her deliverance and protection from the tribulation to come. Satan's use of 91:11, 12, in the temptation of our Lord, will not be forgotten (마4:6).
Psalms 93-100.
Were applied by the Jews to the times of the Messiah, who had in mind His first advent only; but we in the light of subsequent events see their application to His second advent. In Psalm 93 He is entering on His reign; in 94 He is appealed to for judgment on the evil-doers; in 95 Israel is exhorted to praise Him, and warned against unbelief. The substance of the next four is found in 1 Chronicles 16, which was used by David's direction at the dedication of the tabernacle on Mt. Zion, which typified the dispensation of the Messiah.
A break appears at Psalm 101, where David is once more named, and is making a vow of consecration corresponding to Psalm 15. In Psalm 102 he is pouring out a deep complaint, prophetic of Israel's hour of tribulation and her deliverance therefrom (vv. 13-22). Observe that when the kingdoms of the earth are serving the Lord, men will be declaring His name in Zion and praising Him in Jerusalem. As we have seen earlier, that sacred city will be the centre of things in the millennial age.
Psalms 103-108.
Are all of praise. In the first, David rises from a thankful acknowledgment of personal blessings (vv. 1-5) to a celebration of God's attributes. In the next God is praised for His works of creation and providence. In the next Israel's special reasons for praise are enumerated, the thought being carried forward into the two succeeding Psalms, although the second of the two broadens out again into a celebration of God's mercy to all men in their various emergencies. It is one of the most beautiful of the Psalms and its structure affords another good opportunity to illustrate Hebrew poetry.
【시89:1 MHCC】Though our expectations may be disappointed, yet God's promises are established in the heavens, in his eternal counsels; they are out of the reach of opposers in hell and earth. And faith in the boundless mercy and everlasting truth of God, may bring comfort even in the deepest trials.
【시89:2 JFB】2. I have said—expressed, as well as felt, my convictions (고후4:13).
【시89:3 JFB】3, 4. The object of this faith expressed in God's words (삼하7:11-16).
with—or literally, "to"
my chosen—as the covenant is in the form of a promise.
【시89:5 MHCC】The more God's works are known, the more they are admired. And to praise the Lord, is to acknowledge him to be such a one that there is none like him. Surely then we should feel and express reverence when we worship God. But how little of this appears in our congregations, and how much cause have we to humble ourselves on this account! That almighty power which smote Egypt, will scatter the enemies of the church, while all who trust in God's mercy will rejoice in his name; for mercy and truth direct all he does. His counsels from eternity, and their consequences to eternity, are all justice and judgment.
【시89:6 JFB】6, 7. This is worthy of our belief, for His faithfulness (is praised) by the congregation of saints or holy ones; that is, angels (compare 신33:2; 단8:13).
sons of the mighty—(compare 시29:1). So is He to be admired on earth.
【시89:8 JFB】8-14. To illustrate His power and faithfulness examples are cited from history. His control of the sea (the most mighty and unstable object in nature), and of Egypt (시87:4), the first great foe of Israel (subjected to utter helplessness from pride and insolence), are specimens. At the same time, the whole frame of nature founded and sustained by Him, Tabor and Hermon for "east and west," and "north and south," together representing the whole world, declare the same truth as to His attributes.
【시89:12 JFB】12. rejoice in thy name—praise Thy perfections by their very existence.
【시89:15 JFB】15. His government of righteousness is served by "mercy" and "truth" as ministers (시85:10-13).
know the joyful sound—understand and appreciate the spiritual blessings symbolized by the feasts to which the people were called by the trumpet (레25:9, &c.).
walk … countenance—live in His favor (시4:6; 44:3).
【시89:15 MHCC】Happy are those who so know the joyful sound of the gospel as to obey it; who experience its power upon their hearts, and bring forth the fruit of it in their lives. Though believers are nothing in themselves, yet having all in Christ Jesus, they may rejoice in his name. May the Lord enable us to do so. The joy of the Lord is the strength of his people; whereas unbelief dispirits ourselves and discourages others. Though it steals upon us under a semblance of humility, yet it is the very essence of pride. Christ is the Holy One of Israel; and in him was that peculiar people more blessed than in any other blessing.
【시89:16 JFB】16, 17. in—or, "by"
thy righteousness—Thy faithful just rule.
glory—or, "beauty."
of their strength—They shall be adorned as well as protected.
our horn—exalt our power (시75:10; Lu 1:69).
【시89:18 JFB】18. (Margin). Thus is introduced the promise to "our shield," "our king," David.
【시89:19 JFB】19-37. Then—when the covenant was established, of whose execution the exalted views of God now given furnish assurance.
thou … to thy holy one—or godly saint, object of favor (시4:3). Nathan is meant (삼하7:17; 대상17:3-15).
laid help—literally, "given help." David was chosen and then exalted.
【시89:19 MHCC】The Lord anointed David with the holy oil, not only as an emblem of the graces and gifts he received, but as a type of Christ, the King Priest, and Prophet, anointed with the Holy Ghost without measure. David after his anointing, was persecuted, but none could gain advantage against him. Yet all this was a faint shadow of the Redeemer's sufferings, deliverance, glory, and authority, in whom alone these predictions and promises are fully brought to pass. He is the mighty God. This is the Redeemer appointed for us, who alone is able to complete the work of our salvation. Let us seek an interest in these blessings, by the witness of the Holy Spirit in our hearts. As the Lord corrected the posterity of David for their transgressions, so his people shall be corrected for their sins. Yet it is but a rod, not a sword; it is to correct, not to destroy. It is a rod in the hand of God, who is wise, and knows what he does; gracious, and will do what is best. It is a rod which they shall never feel, but when there is need. As the sun and moon remain in heaven, whatever changes there seem to be in them, and again appear in due season; so the covenant of grace made in Christ, whatever alteration seems to come to it, should not be questioned.
【시89:20 JFB】20. I have found—having sought and then selected him (삼상16:1-6).
【시89:21 JFB】21. will protect and sustain (사41:10),
【시89:22 JFB】22-25. by restraining and conquering his enemies, and performing My gracious purpose of extending his dominion—
【시89:25 JFB】25. hand [and] right hand—power (시17:7; 60:5).
sea, and … rivers—limits of his empire (시72:8).
【시89:26 JFB】26, 27. first-born—one who is chief, most beloved or distinguished (출4:22; 골1:15). In God's sight and purposes he was the first among all monarchs, and specially so in his typical relation to Christ.
【시89:28 JFB】28-37. This relation is perpetual with David's descendants, as a whole typical in official position of his last greatest descendant. Hence though in personal relations any of them might be faithless and so punished, their typical relation shall continue. His oath confirms His promise, and the most enduring objects of earth and heaven illustrate its perpetual force (시72:5, 7, 17).
【시89:35 JFB】35. Once—one thing (시27:4).
by my holiness—as a holy God.
that I will not lie—literally, "if I lie"—part of the form of swearing (삼상24:6; 삼하3:35).
【시89:37 JFB】37. It shall … moon … heaven—literally, "As the moon, and the witness in the sky is sure, that is, the moon."
【시89:38 JFB】38-52. present a striking contrast to these glowing promises, in mournful evidences of a loss of God's favor.
cast off—and rejected (compare 시15:4; 43:2; 44:9).
【시89:38 MHCC】Sometimes it is not easy to reconcile God's providences with his promises, yet we are sure that God's works fulfil his word. When the great Anointed One, Christ himself, was upon the cross, God seemed to have cast him off, yet did not make void his covenant, for that was established for ever. The honour of the house of David was lost. Thrones and crowns are often laid in the dust; but there is a crown of glory reserved for Christ's spiritual seed, which fadeth not away. From all this complaint learn what work sin makes with families, noble families, with families in which religion has appeared. They plead with God for mercy. God's unchangeableness and faithfulness assure us that He will not cast off those whom he has chosen and covenanted with. They were reproached for serving him. The scoffers of the latter days, in like manner, reproach the footsteps of the Messiah when they ask, Where is the promise of his coming? 벧후3:3, 4. The records of the Lord's dealings with the family of David, show us his dealings with his church, and with believers. Their afflictions and distresses may be grievous, but he will not finally cast them off. Self-deceivers abuse this doctrine, and others by a careless walk bring themselves into darkness and distress; yet let the true believer rely on it for encouragement in the path of duty, and in bearing the cross. The psalm ends with praise, even after this sad complaint. Those who give God thanks for what he has done, may give him thanks for what he will do. God will follow those with his mercies, who follow him with praises.
【시89:39 JFB】39. An insult to the "crown," as of divine origin, was a profanation.
【시89:40 JFB】40-45. The ruin is depicted under several figures—a vineyard whose broken "hedges," and "strongholds," whose ruins invite spoilers and invaders; a warrior, whose enemies are aided by God, and whose sword's "edge"—literally, "rock" or "strength" (수5:2) is useless; and a youth prematurely old.
【시89:45 JFB】45. days of his youth—or, "youthful vigor," that is, of the royal line, or promised perpetual kingdom, under the figure of a man.
【시89:46 JFB】46. How long, &c.—(Compare 시13:1; 88:14; 렘4:4).
【시89:47 JFB】47. These expostulations are excited in view of the identity of the prosperity of this kingdom with the welfare of all mankind (창22:18; 시72:17; 사9:7; 11:1-10); for if such is the fate of this chosen royal line.
【시89:48 JFB】48. What man—literally, "strong man—shall live?" and, indeed, have not all men been made in vain, as to glorifying God?
【시89:49 JFB】49-51. The terms of expostulation are used in view of the actual appearance that God had forsaken His people and forgotten His promise, and the plea for aid is urged in view of the reproaches of His and His people's enemies (compare 사37:17-35).
【시89:50 JFB】50. bear in my bosom—as feeling the affliction of the people (시69:9).
footsteps—ways (시56:6).
